London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Heritage Lottery Fund grant secures important literary archive for the John Rylands University Library (12 May 2005)
The Collection was formally handed to the Director of the Library, Bill Simpson, on Monday 9 May 2005, by Mr. Christopher Kohler at The John Rylands University Library's Main Library, Oxford Road, Manchester. The Kohler Collection of Manuscripts and Printed Material includes several leaves of a draft of Gissing's novel Verandila (published posthumously in 1904), as well as unpublished family letters. Of particular relevance to the University are the three volumes of Virgil which Gissing was awarded in 1874 as a prize for Latin when he was a student at Owens College, the forerunner of The University of Manchester.

Editorial Review of In the Year of Jubilee (Everyman Paperback Classics)
The fiftieth anniversary of Victoria's reign is a year of celebration and, for young Londoners, a year to experience adult society. After the Jubilee, it will be time to face the consequences of innocent pleasures and frivolous pursuits. A cigarette-smoking business woman, an "examination girl," and an ad man complete the cast for Gissing's (1857-1903) pessimistic evaluation of mass culture.
Customer Reviews of In the Year of Jubilee (Everyman Paperback Classics)
Customer Rating: Review Summary: middle-class struggles and emerging feminism.. Review: Sad to say, most people, even those who are fans of Victorian-era literature, have probably never heard of George Gissing. Those who do know him think perhaps he was a 'one hit wonder' with New Grub Street. While New Grub Street is a brilliant read, his little known In the Year of the Jubilee (IYJ) is also a gem.

George Gissing
The Victorian novelist George Gissing (1857-1903) was born in Wakefield and lived as a boy in the house behind his father's chemist's shop in Thompson's Yard. Another novel, 'A Life's Morning', is set in a thinly disguised Wakefield.
