Feminism - late 17th century vs. early 20th century Mary Astell Biography of Mary Astell Her Writing Charlotte Perkins Gilman Biography of Charlotte Perkins Gilman Her Writing When were they writing? Some Interesting Links ... Bibliography Biography of Mary Astell Mary Astell was born in 1666 to Mary Errington and Peter Astell in the city of Newcastle-on-tyne. Her parents were members of the merchant class and she most likely received her education from her clergyman uncle. Her parents both died by the time that she was 18 years old and she spent the rest of her childhood living with Lady Catherine Jones in London. This gave Mary the chance to be involved with well-educated women who were interested in changing the status of women.
Mary published her first work A Serious Proposal To The Ladies For the Advancement of their True and greatest Interest in 1694. In 1695 Mary published her second work at the request of John Norris. It consists of her private correspondance with him and is titled: Letters Concerning the Love of God . In 1697 Mary published the second part of A Serious Proposal to the Ladies . In this second part Mary gives instructions to women on how to think clearly and logically. In Some Reelections upon Marriage Occasioned by the Duke and Duchess of Mazarine's Case written in 1700, Mary condemns men who marry for money or love of beauty as being governed by irregular appetites. She also counsels women not to marry out of duty or to escape the hardships of life, but to make their decisions based on reason. In 1704 and 1705 Mary turns her attention to religious and political writings.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) Charlotte Anna Perkins was born in Hartford, CT, on 3 July 1860. She was Harriet Beecher Stowe's grandniece by way of her father. Shortly after she was born, her father, Frederic Beecher Perkins, deserted the family and moved to San Francisco. She spent a large part of her life trying to get to know him. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful. In her autobiography, Gilman described her childhood as "painful and lonely." In May 1884, she married Charles Stetson. Aware of the injustices inflicted upon women through marriage, she entered into the marriage with reluctance. Their only child, Katherine, was born within the first eleven months of their marriage. Overwhelmed with her duties as a wife and mother, she became despondent and marital tensions arose as a result. She was persuaded by her mother and her husband to see the neurologist, Dr. S. Weir Mitchell. He prescribed a "rest cure" for Charlotte consisting of total bed rest for several weeks with no intellectual stimulation. She almost went insane. She "came so near to the borderline of mental ruin that [she] could see over" (qtd. in "Why I Wrote the Yellow Wall-paper"). In 1888, Gilman moved to Pasadena, CA, and in 1892 she was granted a divorce from Stetson. Soon after, her former husband married her best friend, Grace Ellery Channing. In 1900, Gilman married her first cousin, George Houghton Gilman. They were very happy living in New York, then in Connecticut until he died suddenly in 1934. After moving to Pasadena to live with her daughter's family, Gilman contracted breast cancer, and within a year took her own life, in 1935.

American feminist and writer, best known for her book Women and Economics (1898), which has become a feminist classic. She was born Charlotte Anna Perkins in Hartford, Connecticut. She was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design and worked as a teacher and commercial artist before devoting herself to feminism. Women and Economics denounces women's financial dependence on men and supports day-care programs and cooperative kitchens. These ideas are explored further in Gilman's books Concerning Children The Home (1903), and Human Work (1904). Gilman founded the journal Forerunner (1909-16), in which she published feminist stories and articles. She also lectured extensively on women's rights and other social issues. Gilman's other writings include "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892), an account of her experience with depression; In This Our World (1893), a collection of poetry; The Man-made World (1911); and His Religion and Hers Microsoft Encarta 96 Encyclopedia

Charlotte Perkins Gilman: Sociology’s First Radical Feminist Theorist By L.A. Lowe History of Sociological Theory Dr. Susan Hoecker-Drysdale Dr. John Drysdale 12 December, 2003 Submitted as partial fulfillment for course requirements Introduction Incredibly brilliant, profoundly prophetic, and skillfully articulate, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was and continues to be a feminist literary giant without equal. Gilman’s contributions to the sociological landscape of early 20 th century America are indisputable. From her The Yellow Wallpaper (1892) to Women and Economics Concerning Children The Home Human Work (1904), and The Man-Made World; or, Our Andocentric Culture The purpose of this paper is to analyze the internal structure, content, consistency, and coherence of Gilman’s critical feminist theory. However, before I commence with the analysis of Gilman’s theory, I provide a brief (but very detailed) biographical and socio-historical introduction to Gilman and discuss her early intellectual influences that very much informed her critical feminist theory. Once I have provided a socio-historical backdrop, I then begin with an analysis of Gilman’s critical feminist theory through a discussion and dissemination of two of her most pivotal works and contributions to sociology

July, 2001 I first read CHARLOTTE PERKINS GILMAN'S short story, "The Yellow Wall-paper," in the early 1970s, in the beginning of "the Second Wave" of feminism. We found Gilman particularly compelling because she had been a turn-of-the-century feminist that is, the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century who concerned herself not just with legal equality for women but also with the psychological, economic and social effects of women's oppression. Although I knew the story well, I'd never thought of it as a story about disability, until Steve Brown of the Institute on Disability Culture suggested it for "Lost Disability Classics." Gilman (1860-1935) based this story on her own years of experiencing "a severe and continuous nervous breakdown tending to melancholia and beyond" (what we would today call depression). In her essay "Why I Wrote 'The Yellow Wall-paper'" Gilman said she had consulted "a noted specialist in nervous diseases, the best known in the country. This wise man . . . sent me home with solemn advice to live as domestic a life as far as possible, to Œhave but two hours' intellectual life a day,' and Œnever to touch pen, brush, or pencil again' as long as I lived. . . . I went home and obeyed those directions for some three months, and came so near the borderline of utter mental ruin that I could see over." I can't resist sharing the following story with Edge readers: While doing background research for this introduction, I realized that Diane Price Herndl's book Invalid Women: Figuring Feminine Illness in American Fiction and Culture, 1840-1940 included a discussion of Gilman's work. So I entered "Invalid Women" into the

Structure, Character, and Theme
"The Yellow Wall-Paper" is a highly symbolic short story, that has intrigued many readers for more than a century. The main question asked is whether it is an account of a woman who is going insane, or a story of a woman who is trying to gain control over her life. The story’s symbolism could cover both meanings. Even though it has been carefully constructed, its ending, and its ‘final’ meaning in particular have been the topic of lengthy discussions. But let us first consider what happens in "The Yellow Wall-Paper". There is not much action in the physical sense. The personified narrator is a woman who has been told she should stay in bed. It is unclear what her illness is, and her husband, who is a doctor, thinks that her disease is mainly imaginary ("’she shall be as sick as she pleases!’"). Nevertheless, he has prescribed a period of complete passivity for her, so that she may recover. The woman, terming her illness "nervous troubles"
