Major Works

Plays and Poems , edited by Deems Taylor ( Random House, 1935 ), contains three plays by Gilbert, all fourteen of the operas written in collaboration with composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan, and The Bab Ballads . The following limits itself to the collaborations of Gilbert and Sullivan during their heyday, with the exception of the Bab Ballads , which show Gilbert's metrical skill and sense of humor and which first brought him to public notice. The Complete Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan , edited and introduced by Ian Bradley, was published by Oxford, 1996.

Quoted in H. Weyl "Mathematics and the Laws of Nature" in I Gordon and S. Sorkin (eds.) The Armchair Science Reader , New York: Simon and Schuster, 1959. And who can doubt that it will lead to the worst disorders when minds created free by God are compelled to submit slavishly to an outside will? When we are told to deny our senses and subject them to the whim of others? When people devoid of whatsoever competence are made judges over experts and are granted authority to treat them as they please? These are the novelties which are apt to bring about the ruin of commonwealths and the subversion of the state.

Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

The partnership between playwright William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) produced, between 1871 and 1896, fourteen comic operas. Some of them remain amongst the most popular of all stage musical productions: The Mikado The Pirates of Penzance H.M.S. Pinafore The Gondoliers and The Yeomen of the Guard Gilbert was a barrister by profession, and many of his stories focus on themes of a legal nature. Even where the theme is not legal, Gilbert often introduced songs dealing with legal subjects. The object of this collection is to bring together those songs which are of most direct interest from a legal perspective.

Bistromathics itself is simply a revolutionary new way of understanding the behavior of numbers. Just as Einstein observed that space was not an absolute but depended on the observer's movement in space, and that time was not an absolute, but depended on the observer's movement in time, so it is now realized that numbers are not absolute, but depend on the observer's movement in restaurants.
Life, the Universe and Everything. New York: Harmony Books, 1982. Adams, Douglas (1952 - )
The first nonabsolute number is the number of people for whom the table is reserved. This will vary during the course of the first three telephone calls to the restaurant, and then bear no apparent relation to the number of people who actually turn up, or to the number of people who subsequently join them after the show/match/party/gig, or to the number of people who leave when they see who else has turned up.
The second nonabsolute number is the given time of arrival, which is now known to be one of the most bizarre of mathematical concepts, a recipriversexcluson, a number whose existence can only be defined as being anything other than itself. In other words, the given time of arrival is the one moment of time at which it is impossible that any member of the party will arrive. Recipriversexclusons now play a vital part in many branches of math, including statistics and accountancy and also form the basic equations used to engineer the Somebody Else's Problem field.

Before age ten, Sullivan had mastered all of the wind instruments in his father's band. He sustained his interest in all things musical and advanced to become the foremost British composer of the day and the darling of high society. His hymn, "Onward, Christian Soldiers" is still with us, though most of his other music has not found a place. Act I - In H. M. S. Pinafore
