London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

    ISBN: 0198161743
Though Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) is best remembered as the writer of the libretti of the ‘Savoy Operas' with Sir Arthur Sullivan, he also enjoyed a very long and successful career in the Victorian theatre first as a writer of pantomimes, then a large number of plays, both comedies and serious drama, and pantomimes. He was also a prolific journalist and produced several volumes of poems, notably the comic ‘Bab Ballads'. His output was considerable; in the 1870s ALONE, before he embarked on his regular collaborations with Sullivan, including ‘HMS Pinafore', ‘The Pirates of Penzance', and ‘The Mikado', he was responsible for over 30 plays.
This biography looks at his life and work with and without Sullivan. It also provides a sympathetic portrait of a perfectionist, who had a hasty temper and could undoubtedly be difficult to work with. For instance, ‘the carpet quarrel' was a trivial dispute which grew out of all proportion and led to his temporarily severing professional and personal relations with Sullivan and the impresario who helped them to success, Richard D'Oyly Carte.

COMIC opera in two acts; text by W. S. Gilbert; music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. First produced at the Savoy Theatre, London, March 14, 1885. First performance in the United States, July 6, 1885, at the Museum, Chicago. Sir William Schwenk Gilbert (1836-1911) Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) Not without reason is this one of the most popular of the long line of "Savoy Operas," for Gilbert's text is a masterpiece of comic writing to which Sullivan's ever tuneful music is perfectly adapted, serving in a remarkable manner to set off the amusing character of the words. The Japanese setting supplies a refreshingly colorful background, although, of course the characters are by no means Japanese, but the Victorian British in a very thin disguise. Mike Leigh's 1999 film Topsy-Turvy is an excellent dramatization of Gilbert and Sullivan's often troubled working relationship, and of how

    Michael Ainger
    Oxford University Press Inc, USA
    Hardcover - 544 pages Amazon.co.uk Price: £35.00 Book Description
After exhaustive research into the D'Oyly Carte collection of documents, Ainger offers the most detailed account to date of Gilbert and Sullivan's starkly different backgrounds and long working partnership. "A Gilbert is of no use without a Sullivan," W.S. Gilbert once summed his reasons for persisting in his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan despite the combative nature of their relationship. Indeed, Michael Ainger suggests, it is the clash between these two strong personalities that accounts for the success of their work together, as each partner challenged the other to produce his best work. Hesketh Pearson
    House of Stratus Ltd
    Paperback - 183 pages Amazon.co.uk Price: £8.99 Book Description
The operas of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan are a national institution. Hesketh Pearson's biography is of the two men who together formed a famous partnership and he is interested in them as individual, quite different personalities - one of the explanations behind their equally famous quarrel. Pearson describes their lives rather than criticise their works. As the operas such as The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance live on the stage, here their authors come to life in a biography.
