24. Gilbert "George" Fitch: Soldier, Carpenter, Quiler
Gilbert George Fitch Soldier, Carpenter, Quilter by Carol Bosshardt George and Olive were married in January 1870, probably in Trumbull County, Ohio.

Gilbert "George" Fitch: Soldier, Carpenter, Quilter
by Carol Bosshardt
For many years an old crazy quilt graced a rocker in the Freighter's Hotel at the Trails and Rails Museum. The tag on the quilt identified it as made by George Fitch, a Civil War Veteran who lived in Buffalo County during the 1910's. Fitch's quilt is known as a soldier quilt. Such quilts have been made by and for soldiers for centuries. Many mothers, sisters, and lovers stitched quilts to send to soldiers or to memorialize the service of their beloved soldier. This issue of Buffalo Tales introduces George Fitch, the maker of Crazy Quilt, and his family.
"It hurts" image is from a soldier quilt embroidered for or by Raymond Fry
About five years ago this writer first visited Gladys Anderson, the delightful old lady who donated the quilt to the museum, and viewed an album in her possession. The album included a few pictures and many newspaper clippings pertaining to George and Olive Fitch, who she always called "Uncle George" and "Aunt Ollie." Since that time, Anderson's "Uncle George" and "Aunt Ollie" have become far more than a couple of old people who lived in Buffalo County from roughly 1910 to 1920. George is not just an old Civil War veteran who made quilts but he is part of an intriguing family whose history extends back to medieval England. The Fitches traveled fairly extensively in the United States during their lifetimes and survived a variety of challenges typical of their times. Fitch's Crazy Quilt includes a wide variety of images that represent important themes in the life of the Fitch family.

Basil
by Linda Gilbert
As I stroll through my garden, soaking up the fading warmth of a late fall day, most of the plants from summer have withered, done for the year. There is one shrub, however, that is still vibrant, bushy and waiting to be used: Basil. Robust, spicy, pleasing to the eye; little wonder it is so praised in the kitchen, as well as in history. Basil has long been revered. It has even been the stuff of legends. In ancient Rome, the name for the herb, Basilescus , referred to Basilisk, the fire breathing dragon. Taking the herb was thought to be the charm against the beast. With this in mind, it is interesting to note that today basil is used as an antidote to venom. The Greeks also had great respect for Basil; their word for it meaning royal or kingly. It was believed that only the king himself should harvest this herb, and only with the use of a golden sickle. In Romania basil took a more romantic turn. There, when a lad accepts a sprig of basil from a maiden, he is officially engaged. There are more than twelve varieties of basil that are cultivated for culinary use. Sweet Basil

Interior of slave kitchen
Bergen Homestead
According to The Eagle and Brooklyn, Vol. 1 , by Henry W. B. Howard, this kitchen was part of the Bergen Homestead in Brooklyn, New York. This substantial fireplace is where the slaves would have done their cooking for the Bergen family. Slaves themselves often lived in tiny wooden cabins, and, depending on the area of the country they lived in, may have cooked outside. Sojourner Truth describes another kind of accommodation: "A cellar...was assigned to his slaves, as their sleeping apartmentall the slaves he possessed, of both sexes...in the same room...and the space between the loose boards on the floor, and the uneven earth below, was often filled with mud and water..." (Gilbert, Olive, editor. The Narrative of Sojourner Truth (1850), dictated by Sojourner Truth, edited by Olive Gilbert.) George Washington used pre-fabricated temporary shacks for his slaves, which were moved following seasonal crops. Citation - Document 4

36. Gilbert Visits The Infinite By David Olive

Gilbert Visits The Infinite By David Olive Besides being a talented fiction writer, David is an at-home-dad and a fencing coach who lives in Austin, Texas. Gilbert pressed his big drooling face to the viewing window and watched the stars spin by.  Deep in the darkness, something caught his attention.
"Look at that, Harvey," whispered Gilbert to his worn, one-eyed teddy bear. "That's the rocket!"
A short man in a long white coat entered behind him, flanked by two plump women in tight fitting nurse uniforms.
"Dr. Lint," said Gilbert, turning to the short man. "I see the rocket. It's real shiny ."
"Yes, Gilbert, it is a very shiny rocket ship," said Dr. Lint, stroking his beard.  "That rocket ship has a name; it's called the Mandrill.  Are you excited?"
"Yes, Dr. Lint, we're very excited!" He jumped excitedly, hugging the bear.  The cords from his portable medical computer jerked behind him.
"Gilbert!" cried Dr. Lint. "You mustn't jump around like that. You'll pull the cords out."

Margaret Wagar of Atlanta, born 1902 and died 1990, was inducted into the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1999. She became Life Master #37 in 1943, the fifth woman to earn the ranking. She and Kay Rhodes share one of the most remarkable achievements in ACBL history by winning the Women's Pairs four consecutive years: 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958. Margaret Wagar's impressive record spans three decades and includes wins in Women's and Open Competition. Her Open wins include the Reisinger in 1941, the Open Pairs, or the forerunner of the Blue Ribbon Pairs, in 1947 and 1948 and the Spingold in 1946 and 1948. Margaret Wagar served on the ACBL Board of Directors from 1960 to 1972 and was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1979. She was non-playing captain of the US World Women's Teams in 1968 and 1972. Until 1976 the Women's Teams was a four session event scored by board-a-match. It was contested as a three session championship until 1972 and again in 1975. The Women's Teams was held at the Fall NABC until 1963. From 1976 the Margaret Wagar trophy is awarded to the winners of the Women's Knockout Teams held at the Summer NABC, with Swiss qualifying. Following are the winners and second place winners for the Wagar Trophy.

http://www.bridgeguys.com/Winners/CoffinWinners.html
The Coffin Trophy is one of the oldest and most historic trophies in play in NABC competition. For years there was only one "National" Women's Team championship, and that was a Board-a-Match event. The Coffin Trophy, donated by Mr. Charles Emmet Coffin in 1933, was contested at the "Winter Nationals" in the days when there were only two NABC championships, Summer and Winter. Until 1976 the event was a four-session event scored by Board-A-Match and was contested as a three-session championship until 1972 and in 1975. It was then held at the Fall North American Championships until 1963. In 1976 the event became a North American Championship Women's Knockout with Swiss qualifying. Mr. Charles Emmet Coffin was president of the Indianapolis Whist Club, the Indiana Whist Association and the American Whist League. The trophy was first awarded to the winners of the National Women's Auction Team-of-Four Championship. Until 1976 it was a four-session event scored by Board-a-Match. It was contested as a three-session championship until 1972 and in 1975. The event was held at the Fall NABC until 1963 where it was transferred to the Spring NABC. In 1976 the event became a North American Championship Women's Knockout.
