III chapters on this web-page: Go back to: Page 160 BOOK III IN MISSOURI CHAPTER I THE DIRECTIONS TO THE SAINTS ABOUT THEIR ZION T HE state of Missouri, to which the story of the Mormons is now transferred, was, at the time of its admission to the Union, in 1821, called "a promontory of civilization into an ocean of savagery." Wild Indian tribes occupied the practically unexplored region beyond its western boundary, and its own western counties were thinly settled. Jackson County, which in 1900 had 195,193 inhabitants, had a population of 2823 by the census of 1830, and neighboring counties not so many. It was not until 1830 that the first cabin of a white man was built in Daviess County. All this territory had been released from Indian ownership by treaty only a few years when the first Mormons arrived there. The white settler's house was a log hut, generally with a dirt floor, a mud-plastered chimney, and a window without glass, a board or quilt serving to close it in time of storm or severe cold. A fireplace, with a skillet and kettle, supplied the place of a well-equipped stove. Corn was the principal grain food, and wild game supplied most of the meat. The wild animals furnished clothing as well as food; for the pioneers could not afford to pay from 15 to 25 cents a yard for calico, and from 25 to 75 cents for gingham. Some persons indulged in homespun cloth for Sunday and festal occasions, but the common outside garments were made of dressed deerskins. Parley P. Pratt, in his autobiography

Oxymorons Recommend this page to a friend. Oxymora (there's a nice Latin touch; only trouble is that it's of Greek origin) are literary figures of speech usually composed of a pair of neighboring contradictory words (often within a sentence). However, this is not always the case. The Webster Dictionary defines oxymoron as “a combination of contradictory or incongruous words”. Oxymora can be used for dramatic effect, for example: Hell's Angels and deafening silence. They can also be comical, such as in civil engineer. Clearly this is not an oxymoron in the true and strict sense, but the suggestion that it is oxymoronic is humorous. Others oxymora have quite acceptable meaningful uses in English, but, when analyzed word for word, contain contradictions. Examples include almost perfect, clearly misunderstood, and pretty ugly. How can something be almost perfect when perfect is perfect? How can something be clearly misunderstood (of course here the word “clearly” is really meant as an adverb and not as an adjective as “misunderstood” is. And how can something be pretty ugly (again, “pretty” here modifies "ugly) Reminds me of one being almost pregnant (another oxymoron). The word oxymoron (plural: oxymora) is derived from the Greek for pointedly foolish (oxys = SHARP, KEEN + moros = FOOLISH).

The Governor and the Haymarket Anarchists Early in 1882, Oglesby's old political and veteran friends began to encourage his candidacy for David Davis's Senate seat, which would expire in January 1883. Davis had been elected by Independents and Democrats and had no standing with a Republican majority. A typical message came from a politically connected veteran who wrote, "your old soldiers are praying for your success." But his trip to the Colorado mines, the move to Lincoln, and his concerns about his family and new son kept delaying his active candidacy. In January 1882 his characteristic answer was that he ought not "at present" become a candidate and that he was occupied with home affairs. By May he was saying that he might announce if he "felt overwhelming support." In June he still counseled that it was "unsure and premature" to announce but that he "would feel gratified to be chosen." Oglesby was ill in July 1882, but he traveled to Leadville in August and returned in September. His Colorado mining venture and the Chicago and St. Louis property investments looked better, and his bank balance was in the thousands rather than the usual hundreds. Perhaps he could afford to be in politics again. He was not as active in the 1882 off-year state elections as usual, however. Still smarting over his embarrassing displacement by John A. Logan in 1879, he preferred to have legislators seek him and thus be vindicated. Republicans won a small majority in the Illinois legislature, but Oglesby seems not to have corresponded with them as fervently as in previous attempts at the Senate.

The Jewish Journal Archive October 16 - October 29, 1998 feature stories international news letters to the editor national news ... opinion pieces Editorial A Daughter of Israel Becomes a Saint On Sunday, October 11, 50,000 people witnessed the canonization of Edith Stein, a born Jew who turned atheist, and later Catholic. A brilliant scholar, she was the first woman to earn a doctorate in Germany. Eventually she became a Carmelite nun and a leading voice in the German Catholic Women's Movement. Though she shed her Jewish faith, it is evident she did not forsake her people. In 1933, the same year that she entered the convent, she requested an audience with Pope Pius XI. In an atmosphere of mounting hatred and violence, she implored him to speak out against the growing Nazi menace. Sadly, he declined. In that frightening era, this courageous woman was given the opportunity to be transferred to a Carmelite convent in South America, out of harm's way. Stein opted instead to remain in Germany to be close to her family. Later she fled to a convent in Holland, only to be hunted down in a few years by the Gestapo, shipped to Auschwitz and gassed to death. The Nazis viewed her as a Jew. In her heart, she was a devout Catholic. Jewish leaders have protested her canonization, saying she was a victim, as were six million Jews.

In making the presentation, Leonard Greenberg, an Honorary AJC Vice-President, commented: "In 1980, it was Bill Moyers who first exposed the anti-Jewish nature of Dr. Bailey Smith's address in Dallas in which Mr. Smith, then President of the Southern Baptist Convention, claimed 'God Almighty doesn't hear the prayers of a Jew.'" In addition to his excellent programs on the Constitution, Mr. Moyers has also analyzed the dangers inherent in some of the radical Religious Right groups. After expressing his thanks as the first recipient of this award, Bill Moyers prefaced his acceptance speech by saying, "As much as I prize the honor of your recognition, I especially welcome the chance to tell you how important it is that America's oldest human rights organization has instituted this award in behalf of religious liberty. There could not be a more timely moment for the American Jewish Committee to proclaim once again the rights of conscience as the well-spring of freedom."
