Extent: 399 shelfmarks
Scope and Content
The Bickersteths are a family noted for the last six generations for their tradition of service to the Church of England. This collection of papers contains mainly family correspondence and papers from five of these generations, beginning with (section A) the papers of Edward Bickersteth, rector of Watton (1786-1850), followed by (section B) those of his son Edward Henry Bickersteth (1825-1906) Bishop of Exeter, poet and hymnographer, who married Rosa, daughter of Sir Samuel Bignold, MP for Norwich. The third section (C), papers of their second son Samuel Bickersteth (1857-1937), forms a large part of the collection. He was ordained priest in 1882, having married in 1881 Ella, daughter of Sir Monier Monier-Williams founder of the Indian Institute in Oxford. They had six sons, one of whom was killed in the First World War. This section includes weekly letters from three of the boys to their parents throughout their school and university days. The letters continue through the First World War forming an eleven volume record known as the Bickersteth Diary, 1914-18, which was kept by their mother, and in 1995 was edited and published (London, 1995) by her grandson John Bickersteth, sometime Bishop of Bath and Wells. This section also includes scrapbooks containing newscuttings, and printed ephemera concerning family, parish and national events, family photograph albums and correspondence of the Monier-Williams family.

Five Years on the Western Front : a Memoir by Philip Gibbs
left : Philip Gibbs at work in 1916 right : a drawing made from a sketch by Philip Gibbs in 1914
Fleet Street in the days before the declaration of war was like the nerve center of the nation's psychology, and throbbed with all the emotions of fear, hysteria, incredulity, and patriotic fever, deadened at times by a kind of intellectual stupor, which took possession of her people. Even now, when war was certain, the press said, "It is impossible!" as indeed the nation did, in its little homes, because their imagination refused to admit the possibility of that monstrous cataclysm. And when war was declared, the press said, "It will be over in three months." Indeed, men I knew in Fleet Street, old colleagues of mine, said, "It will be over in three weeks!" Their theory seemed to be that Germany had gone mad and that with England, France, and Russia attacking on all sides, she would collapse like a pricked bladder. Looking back on that time, I find a little painful amusement in the thought of our immeasurable ignorance as to the meaning of modern warfare. We knew just nothing about its methods or machinery, nor about its immensity of range and destruction.
