Life
Gibbon was born in Putney then a town by the river Thames , near London England . His grandfather had made and lost the family fortune in the South Sea Bubble . Gibbon was the only child, and he described himself as "a weakly child" in his memoirs. After his mother died while he was 10 years old, he attended Kingston Grammar School , and stayed at the boarding house of his favorite "Aunt Kitty". At the age of 14, he was sent away by his father to Magdalen College at the University of Oxford , where he enrolled as a gentleman-commoner. Gibbon was ill-suited to the college atmosphere, and the most memorable event of his time there was his conversion to Roman Catholicism on June 8 . Religious controversies raged on the Oxford campus, and while their intellectual standards were sometimes described as bleak, obsolete, and barren, the 16 year-old Gibbon was not immune to this controversial religious trend and he later remarked, with his flair for sarcastic understatement, "from my childhood, I had been fond of religious disputation".

Gibbon, Edward (1737 - 1794) UK Writer VD
Writer and historian of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon was born in England on April 27, 1737 and spent his youth on the banks of Lake Geneva . As was the tradition with upper class English families, he came to Switzerland to complete his education. The young man studied at the faculty of law, language and history in Lausanne , where he also frequented the literary salons to read the foreign press and play whist. He fell head over heels with the pastor's daughter, Suzanne Curchod, and wanted to marry her, but her father was categorically opposed. Gibbon had to resign himself to a life of celibacy. The young man thus left the city to forget his sorrows, only to return five years later. He wrote his life's work

Gibbon, Edward (1737 - 1794) Angleterre Ecrivain Lausanne / VD

Gibbon History of The Decline And Fall of The Roman Empire Introduction
"[Of the emperor Gordian] Twenty-two acknowledged concubines, and a library of sixty-two thousand volumes, attested to the variety of his inclinations, and from the productions which he left behind him, it appears that the former as well as the latter were designed for use rather than ostentation. [Footnote] By each of his concubines the younger Gordian left three or four children. His literary productions were by no means contemptible." ( The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Edward Gibbon was born in Putney on May 8th, 1737 into a wealthy Parliamentary family whose children had a habit of dying early. He was a sickly child and this ill-health no doubt influenced him to write his great work The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire rather than, say, The Ascent and Rise of the Roman Empire . He attended Westminster School for a while, but proved too sickly to withstand the rigours of public-school life and retired to the country where he was taught by a succession of tutors. However, at the age of fifteen, he began to grow stronger and was soon entered at Magdalen College, Oxford. Gibbon turned to Roman Catholicism whilst at Oxford. It was still a religion whose practitioners where barred from public office and he was swiftly sent abroad by his father. He went to Lausanne where he began his first work:
