As noted in the first part of this essay, Gibbon feels, thinks, and writes as a Republican Roman. When he praises or criticises someone or something, it is always from the standpoint of a contemporary Roman citizen. The following Table of Opposites will help us understand what Gibbon's likes and dislikes are:

British historian who wrote the classic text The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Encyclopedia Gibbon, Edward, 1737–94, English historian, author of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. His childhood was sickly, and he had little formal education but read enormously and omnivorously. He went at the age of 15 to Oxford, but was forced to leave because of his conversion to Roman Catholicism. His father sent him (1753) to Lausanne, where he was formally reconverted to Protestantism. Actually, he became a skeptic and later greatly offended the pious by his famous chapters of historical criticism of Christianity in his great work. In Lausanne he fell in love with the penniless daughter of a pastor, Suzanne Curchod (who was later to be the great intellectual, Mme Necker). The two were engaged to be married, but Gibbon's father refused consent. Gibbon “sighed as a lover” but “obeyed as a son” and gave up the match. He left Lausanne in 1758. It was on a visit to Rome that he conceived the idea of his magnificent and panoramic history. This appeared as The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (6 vol., 1776–88) and won immediate acclaim, despite some harsh criticism. Gibbon himself was assured of the greatness of his work, which is, indeed, one of the most-read historical works of modern times. He entered upon a short and highly inglorious political career, serving as a member of Parliament from 1774 to 1783. He violently opposed the American Revolution, although later he was to look with favor on the more radical French Revolution. In 1783 he withdrew to Lausanne, where he completed his masterpiece. His own

    Who Is Edward Gibbon?
Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) was an 18th Century British historian and the author of "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," one of the few historical works of the modern era to stand comparison with the great classical works of Herodotus, Thucydides and Tacitus both as history and as literature.
At a million and a half words, Gibbon's masterpiece is not only one of the greatest works of history ever written, but one of the longest. As with Tolstoy's "War and Peace" and Proust's "A la recherche du temps perdu," its very length is daunting to many readers.
The comparison with Proust is particularly appropriate, since both Gibbon and Proust made the same (arguable) mistake. Roughly midway through the writing of their respective books, they decided to reconceive their scale. This ended up making their books more than twice as long as they would have been if they'd followed their original conceptions. Without a doubt, this has had the effect of cutting their potential readership in at least half. A lot of people who would read a book of half a million words will balk at attempting a book of a million and a half.

    Edward Gibbon
Edward Gibbon was the eldest of seven children born to Edward Gibbon and Julia Porten, and their only child to survive infancy. He attributed his survival to the affectionate care of his aunt, Catherine Porten, " the true mother of my mind as well as my health It was she who encouraged him in his " invincible love of reading ," which he pursued widely in his grand-father's library until his " indiscriminate appetite subsided by degrees in the historic line Gibbon's early schooling had been irregular and frequently interrupted by illness. Then, suddenly, as he approached his sixteenth year, "his disorders wonderfully vanished." Shortly afterwards his father sent him to Oxford. Here he received neither instruction nor companionship, finding the boys frivolous, the dons indolent, and his fourteen months at the university "the most idle and unprofitable" of his whole life. In the course of his solitary literary rambles during these fourteen months, Gibbon became converted to Catholicism. He wrote to his father of the step, and the elder Gibbon, with the impetuosity that seems to have characterised his dealings with his son, sent the sixteen-year-old youth to Lausanne. Here under the tutelage of the Calvinist minister, M. Pavilliard, young Gibbon repudiated his Catholicism and followed a carefully supervised program of studies with particular emphasis on the French and Latin classics and on the mastery of these languages.

    Gibbon, Edward
Encyclopedia Article Gibbon, Edward (1737-1794), the greatest English historian of his time and author of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776-1788). Despite the availability of new factual data and a recognition of Gibbon's Western bias, which placed moral judgments on the material decadence of Roman times, Decline and Fall is still read and enjoyed. Gibbon was born in Putney (now part of London). He was a sickly child and had almost no formal schooling. He was, however, an avid reader. As he approached age 15, his health suddenly improved, and his father entered him in Magdalen College, University of Oxford. However, Gibbon hated Oxford. Study of early Christianity led him to convert to Roman Catholicism in June 1753, thus barring him from the university, which at that time admitted only Anglicans. His father sent Gibbon to Lausanne, Switzerland, in care of a Calvinist pastor, who by Christmas, 1754, had reconciled him to Protestantism. Gibbon remained in Switzerland for nearly five years. He rounded out his classical education, adding the study of logic and Greek to his Latin. He conversed with savants, did some writing in French, and, for the first and only time, fell in love. On his return to England in 1758, however, his father put an end to the engagement. By that time Gibbon had determined to devote his life to scholarship and writing. After two years in the Hampshire militia, he left again for Europe. In 1764, while visiting Rome, Gibbon decided to write about the city's history. In another two years his project was clear, and he began to set down on paper 1300 years of history.
