B ... Z JOHN GAY (1685-1732). English poet and dramatist. Best known for The Beggar's Opera You've probably heard 'Weird Al' Yankovic on the radio or recordings, or turned on PBS and seen Mark Russell. Each of them sings other people's songs, but with their own, often satirical words added to make the lyrics relevant and funny. This is called parody and it is exactly what John Gay did with his Beggar's Opera. To create what came to be known as a ballad opera, he concocted a plot that lampooned not only the morals of eighteenth century London, but also the style of Italian opera seria. In doing so, he played to the interests of a broad segment of society and helped to bring about changes on the opera stage. This wide appeal made The Beggar's Opera the most successful theater event of the century. The sources for his songs were equally broad, from parodies of operatic works by George Frideric Handel (the leading composer of Italian opera in England) to folk and popular songs that dated back over a hundred years. The work's influence continued into the twentieth century, when Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht created a modern version, the Threepenny Opera (1928).

Name: John Gay Birth Date: June 30, 1685 Death Date: December 4, 1732 Place of Birth: Barnstaple, Devonshire, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: playwright, poet, author John Gay Main Biography The English playwright and poet John Gay (1685-1732) is best known for "The Beggar's Opera," a skillful blend of literary, political, social, and musical satire. John Gay was born on June 30, 1685, in Barnstaple, Devonshire. Orphaned at age 10, he was sent to the local grammar school until, aged about 17, he was apprenticed to a silk dealer in London. Possibly because of illness, he was released from this apprenticeship in 1706 and returned to Barnstaple. In 1708 he became Aaron Hill's secretary, helping especially with Hill's question-and-answer periodical paper, the British Apollo . That year Gay published his first poem

Satire is a sort of glass wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own, which is the chief reason so few are offended by it.
(Swift. preface to The Battle of the Books)
'Satire . . . should be true up to a certain point' wrote George Eliot. The best and most disturbing satire almost always has a large element of possible truth to it. In this essay I wish to examine how writers, particularly Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) and John Gay (1685-1732) have satirized the nature of man and his place in the great Chain of Being.
Gulliver's Travels
In Swift's Gulliver's Travels the observations on man are particularly astute and the satire particularly disturbing. Swift wrote the work 'to vex the world rather than divert it' and it has been considered by many to be a deeply misanthropic novel. Swift was, indeed, a misanthrope to a certain extent. He said he hated mankind but found it possible to love individuals. However, this seems difficult to believe when the bleak light in which Gulliver sees the human race by the end of the novel is observed.

John Gay
Life is a jest, and all things show it;
I thought so once, and now I know it. John gay is buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, London. (However, his monument was moved to the triforium when a medieval fresco was discovered beneath it.) (See map...ref no. 11) Gay's first mature poem - The Shepherd's Week (1714) was written in the mock-heroic style of Pope. It parodied the pastoral poems of Ambrose Philips (Pope's arch rival) and involved the exploits of various yokels with names such as Bumkinet and Boobyclod. In 1720 Gay published Poems on Several Occasions which proved to be popular and profitable. Unfortunately, he invested the money he made from them in the South Sea Company and subsequently lost everything when the bubble burst. Along with Swift Pope and Arbuthnot, Gay was a member of the Scriblerus Club . Gay was a gifted satirist but his poetry was overshadowed by that of Pope and Swift. John Gay Poets' Corner Gay is chiefly remembered today for his satirical play The Beggar's Opera.

To a Lady
WHEN I some antique Jar behold,
Appear the types of woman-kind:
Too fair, too fine for household duty?
The treasure cannot cost too dear!
But Man is made of coarser stuff,
And serves convenience well enough;
For drudging, labour, toil and trade;
And when wives lose their other self,
With ease they bear the loss of Delf. Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter

    In the last year of Queen Anne's life, Gay was made secretary to the Earl of Clarendon, ambassador to the court of Hanover. This was a station that naturally gave him hopes of kindness from every party; but the Queen's death put an end to her favours, and he had dedicated his "Shepherd's Week" to Bolingbroke, which Swift considered as the crime that obstructed all kindness from the house of Hanover.

    Life is a jest; and all things show it,
    I thought so once; but now I know it.

    - John Gay's epitaph
    As we sit here, nearly 300 years removed from the debut of The Beggar's Opera,

    it's hard to recapture the effect that it had on the England of 1728. So look
    at it this way, John Gay was the Sex Pistols of his day and The Beggar's Opera
    hit London like Never Mind the Bollocks.... Since Italian opera had first come to London in 1705, it had dominated the
    British stage. Replete with ornate sets, elaborate costumes, unintelligible
    plots and imported sopranos and castrati, it was less art than event. Audiences
    romantic tales unfolded on stage.
    Into this artificial world, Gay unleashed an opera about the scum of London
    society, set in taverns and thieves' dens. He tells the story of Peachum, a fence with a lucrative sideline in informing on fellow criminals. His daughter Polly has secretly married MacHeath, a highwayman. Now Peachum and his "wife"
