Dear Ashton, I hope you're enough of an independent thinker to actually read The Skeptical Environmentalist .  I bought the book last year before all the name-calling and pie slinging started and so far (I'm about 1/3 of the way into it) can't find anything so extraordinarily terrible in it.  The reaction from various environmental groups seems to be about the same as certain Christians to Harry Potter :  "I haven't read and I'm not going to read it, but I know it's evil 'cause somebody said so." Lomborg's basic tenets are fairly straightforward:
  • First, that the environment in those countries that have been putting time and $ into it are getting better as measured by objective criteria (particulate levels in the air, waste water levels in rivers, etc.)  It seems rather odd, but a certain number of environmentalist groups have taken umbrage at this.  My response (not Lomborg's) is to say that if 40 years and trillions of dollars in direct and indirect costs haven't produce any benefits at all, it's past time to dismantle the EPA and remove onerous regulations from industry and agriculture. Second, that in the rest of the world, poverty is the biggest threat to the environment and if the "west" is truly concerned, we will put more effort into seeing that everyone has clean water, plentiful cheap food, and a chance at the good life. And that for now we should pay less developed countries for their conservation efforts.

After the loss of her mother at the age of one, she was brought up by her aunt, Hannah Lamb, who lived in Knutsford, a country town in the suburb of Manchester. Elizabeth shared her father's religious beliefs and attended the local Unitarian chapel and taught Sunday School. At the age of eighteen, Elizabeth's brother, John Stevenson was lost at sea. The news devastated her father and he went into a deep depression that he would never awake from. Elizabeth returned to her father's household in London where she nursed him until his death in 1829. A distant relative, William Turner, a Unitarian minister in Newcastle, invited Elizabeth to live with his family. Elizabeth's was deeply influenced by Turner's religious beliefs and charitable works. On a visit to Turner's daughter, who lived in Manchester, Elizabeth met William Gaskell, a minister at their local Unitarian chapel. They quickly developed a close friendship and were married on August 30th, 1832. Most of William Gaskell's parishioners were textile workers and Elizabeth was deeply shocked by the poverty she witnessed in Manchester. Elizabeth, like her husband, became involved in various charity work in the city.

Elizabeth Gaskell was an acclaimed and prominent Victorian novelist, and a contemporary and friend of Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte , among others. Her writings reflect both her happy upbringing in the Cheshire countryside and her concern for the privations of the working classes of Manchester, where she spent most of her adult life. Among her most famous works are the novels Mary Barton and North and South, and her controversial biography The Life of Charlotte Brontë.
