"Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) caused a storm in 1848 with the publication of her first novel Mary Barton , a tale of love, industrial unrest and murder in Manchester; her husband William was a Unitarian minister in the city, and his congregation included many of the mill-owners whom she attacked for their unfeeling treatment of the poor. Although Gaskell is reformist rather than radical, seeking `dialogue' and understanding between the classes, her novel showed great courage. This bravery was still more evident in Ruth (1853), the first English novel to take `a fallen woman' as its heroine - a problematic figure who is both `pure' and a sinner. While the circulating libraries banned the novel and some outraged readers even burnt it, women writers like Charlotte Bronte and Elizabeth Barrett Browning praised Ruth strongly, complaining only that is did not go far enough. Gaskell's justification in the face of attack was always her duty to tell the `truth', a justification she later used in connection with her brilliant and controversial

    Elizabeth Gaskell
Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson Gaskell (1810-1865), a lifelong Unitarian and the wife of an eminent Unitarian minister, was the author of a half-dozen novels, numerous short stories, and a biography of Charlotte Brontë. In her fiction she examined some of the the social issues of her time, particularly those associated with industrialization in mid-19th century England, the rise of the middle class, and the status of women. Although her books do not mention Unitarians explicitly, a number of her characters express general Unitarian values or are modeled on Unitarian originals and the plots of the books teach the lessons of her particular form of Unitarian theology. Elizabeth was born in Chelsea, then a rural suburb on the western outskirts of London. Her parents, William and Elizabeth Stevenson, came from long lines of Dissenters: he from a radical branch, she from the more conservative Holland family. The Hollands were related to their fellow Unitarians, the Wedgewoods, and, through them, to the Darwins. Elizabeth's uncle Peter Holland was a physician whose practice included the appentices at nearby Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, a model cotton mill run by the Unitarian Greg family. Prior to his marriage William Stevenson had been a teacher at Manchester Academy and a preacher at Dob Lane Unitarian Chapel, Manchester. Rejecting the idea of paid ministry, he went to Scotland and apprenticed as a "scientific" farmer, 1797-1801. Unlike his friend James Cleghorn, Stevenson was not a success at farming. He was next a teacher and journalist in Edinburgh, 1801-04; then in London a civil servant until death, at the same time writing books and articles on agriculture, topography, and naval history.

Cranford (1853) and Wives and Daughters (1866) have been the most acclaimed of her works, although today Mary Barton (1848), her first novel, and North and South (1855) receive more critical attention. The two pairs of novels represent Gaskell's prevailing interests as an author: provincial life and urban issues. In all of her writing, Gaskell was concerned with how individual lives play out against the pressures of history and social life.
Gaskell was the daughter and wife of Unitarian ministers. Born in London, the infant Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson was sent, after the death of her mother, to live with an aunt in the Cheshire village of Knutsford, which would become the model for Cranford and for Hollingford in Wives and Daughters. After her father's death, she visited the urban centers of London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Manchester, and it was in Manchester that she met and married William Gaskell in 1832.
Out of her observations of the Manchester poor came Mary Barton, Shirley)

    Introduction
In A Room of One's Own (1929), Virginia Woolf famously claimed that, in order to write, a woman needs her own income and her own room. Woolf also imagined that Shakespeare had a sister. As creative as this sister might have been, her life in Renaissance England would have denied her every opportunity to write, to be an artist like her brother. Some women of that period did write, and some of that writing remains: The journals of Margery Kempe are in print today, and Elizabeth I left written records of her reign. But the fact remains that until the 18th century, literacy rates among women were low, and evidence of women's writing is sparse.
Woolf also claimed that a revolution in literature began with the simple fact that in the 18th century, the middle-class woman began to write. In the English canon, we might move Woolf's date back a few years. Although Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719) is generally considered the first English novel, some critics prefer to give that distinction to Aphra Behn's

Mary Barton , set in Manchester
She was remarkably independent and energetic and an enthusiastic traveller, at home and o the continent, and drew upon a wide range of experience in her writing. She was not afraid to tackle the pressing social problems of the day. Her literary output was varied including not only numerous short stories, tales of mystery, murder and the supernatural, the anecdotal and amusing Cranford , for which she is perhaps best known, but also Mary Barton which deals with unemployment, drug addiction and poverty, Ruth the story of an unmarried mother; the novel North and South set in Manchester, The Life of Charlotte Brontë , a pioneer work of literary biography: Sylvia's Lovers , a historical novel set in Whitby, Cousin Phillis , a love story set in the Cheshire countryside; and the novel she had almost completed when she died suddenly in 1865, Wives and Daughters. Her letters are full of interest, detail and wit, and make fascinating reading, although none to her husband survive.
Elizabeth Gaskell has always been popular, and her books have often been presented on radio and television
