Chapter Five
The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914
T he U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) between the industrial North and the agricultural, slave-owning South was a watershed in American history. The innocent optimism of the young democratic nation gave way, after the war, to a period of exhaustion. American idealism remained but was rechanneled. Before the war, idealists championed human rights, especially the abolition of slavery; after the war, Americans increasingly idealized progress and the self-made man. This was the era of the millionaire manufacturer and the speculator, when Darwinian evolution and the "survival of the fittest" seemed to sanction the sometimes unethical methods of the successful business tycoon. Business boomed after the war. War production had boosted industry in the North and given it prestige and political clout. It also gave industrial leaders valuable experience in the management of men and machines. The enormous natural resources iron, coal, oil, gold, and silver of the American land benefitted business. The new intercontinental rail system, inaugurated in 1869, and the transcontinental telegraph, which began operating in 1861, gave industry access to materials, markets, and communications. The constant influx of immigrants provided a seemingly endless supply of inexpensive labor as well. Over 23 million foreigners German, Scandinavian, and Irish in the early years, and increasingly Central and Southern Europeans thereafter flowed into the United States between 1860 and 1910. Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino contract laborers were imported by Hawaiian plantation owners, railroad companies, and other American business interests on the West Coast.

A Tribute of Grasses
To W. W. S ERENE, vast head, with silver cloud of hair Lined on the purple dusk of death, Old Norseman, throned, not chained upon thy chair, Thy grasp of hand, thy hearty breath Of welcome thrills me yet As when I faced thee there! Loving my plain as thou thy sea, Facing the East as thou the West, The prairie grasses I know the best; Type of the wealth and width of the plain, Strong of the strength of the wind and sleet, Fragrant with sunlight and cool with rain, I bring it and lay it low at thy feet, Here by the eastern sea. A Wish A LL day and many days I rode, And as I rode a longing came to me That I might keep the sunset road, Riding my horse right on and on, And so reach boyhood from the dawn, And be with all the days at rest. For then the odor of the growing wheat, The flare of sumach on the hills, The touch of grasses to my feet Would fill my heart so full of joy That no stern lines could fret my face. There would I be forever boy, Do You Fear the Wind? D O you fear the force of the wind, The slash of the rain?

Related Category: American Literature, Biographies Hamlin Garland Main-travelled Roads Prairie Folks (1893), and Wayside Courtships (1897), were bitter pictures of the futility of farm lives. Besides realistic novels of the prairies : A Little Norsk (1892) and Rose of Dutcher's Coolly (1895), he wrote several propagandist novels, including Jason Edwards: An Average Man (1892), urging the single tax doctrine, and A Spoil of Office (1892), supporting the Populist party. Garland is perhaps best remembered for his two autobiographical works, A Son of the Middle Border (1917) and A Daughter of the Middle Border (1921, Pulitzer Prize). He was also the author of essays, a biography of President Grant (1898), and several books on spiritualism. See biography by J. Holloway (1960, repr. 1971).

The link for all the short stories in Main Traveled Roads is up and working perfectly now at the following URL: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/2809 Hamlin Garland Sherwood Anderson Main-Traveled Roads (‘O) Winesburg, Ohio Both Hamlin Garland (1860 - 1940) and Sherwood Anderson (1876 - 1941) had very strong notions about what America should be and to what degree America was living up to these notions. We will be reading the best works of both well-known authors. I will lecture on the cultural history of the period as well as the various manifestations of American literary realism and naturalism. Grades will depend on weekly quizzes (on the readings for the week) and a short answer exam (on my lectures) which will be given at the end of each term. Since these works are both classics, they are of course available on-line. If you wish, you may purchase the books on your own, but you don't have to. You may copy the pages that you need off the internet or if you wish to bring a floppy disk to class, I will put the books on your diskette. In one form or another, you must bring the pages that we are working on to class. Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio
