Staff of Algonquin College Learning Resource Centre.
In 2002 the LRC (Learning Resource Centre) at Algonquin College was a quiet, peaceful place. Books were dusty and it was always easy to find a seat. Today the library is a hustle and bustle with students. Over 230 seating spaces will be filled between the hours of 11:00 am until 3:00 pm, reserve laptops are in heavy rotation and reference questions are on the rise.
Many of the initiatives we enacted over the past two years support the students in Algonquin's online environment. We are finding that by supporting them technologically we are winning back library users. The laptop program has been pivotal in helping our students rediscover the library.
Computers at the college were in high demand. Algonquin uses Blackboard, an online course delivery package, to some degree for all courses. Study space for group work was also in high demand - we decided to provide it. Using our reserve system we started circulating laptops and students came in droves. And when they came for laptops they stayed for reference help, ILL, database use.

    John Galt
The son of a sea captain, John Galt was born in Irvine on 2 May 1799. The family moved to Greenock in 1789, and after leaving the Grammar School John was apprenticed to the Custom House and became a junior clerk with local merchant James Miller in 1796. Galt began to write essays and stories for local journals while pursuing his business ambitions. He moved to London in 1804 to seek his fortune, but failed to find it, and he studied law at Lincoln's Inn in 1809, then travelled in Europe for two years, becoming a friend of Lord Byron , of whom he would write the first full biography. On his return he published an account of his travels, which met with some success. In 1813 Galt tried to set up a trading company in Gibraltar to circumvent Napoleon's embargo on British trade in Europe, but Wellington's victory in Spain made this no longer necessary. Galt returned to London, where he married Elizabeth Tilloch. In 1815 he became Secretary of the Royal Caledonian Asylum in London, and acted as a consultant in several business ventures. For some months in 1818 he lived in Glasgow, and in 1819-20 he wrote a number of school textbooks under the pseudonym "Rev. T. Clark". Between 1820 and 1822 he wrote six novels for serialisation in Blackwood's Magazine, among them his most famous, "The Annals Of The Parish", in which elderly minister Micah Balwhidder recounts events in the imaginary Ayrshire village of Dalmailing. Galt lived briefly in Edinburgh while writing "Sir Andrew Wylie" and "The Provost" for Blackwood. Displeased with Blackwood's editorial interference in his work, he broke with him after "The Entail" and moved to another Edinburgh publisher, Oliver and Boyd, for his novel of the Covenanters, "Ringan Gilhaize" (1823). He later returned to Blackwood.

In 1546 the town suffered much from the plague; in 1640 twelve women were executed at it for the crime of witchcraft; and it bore a considerable share in the struggles of the Covenanters. In 1783, in connection with the Rev. Hugh White, second minister of the Relief congregation, and with several other influential townsfolk, Elizabeth Buchan (1738-91) here founded the fanatical sect of the Buchanites. Arts ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Learning Journeys John Galt Biography John Galt was born in Irvine in 1779, the son of a sea captain who traded with the West Indies. In 1789 the family moved to Greenock and much of Galt’s fiction draws from the localities of the west coast of Scotland where he spent his youth. He was a sickly child and much of his time was spent listening to the traditional tales of his mother and the local women of Greenock, an influence that feeds into Galt’s gift for storytelling and his acute ear for regional dialect. John Galt was possessed of a pragmatic as well as an imaginative turn of mind. He had a keen interest in business and politics and always maintained that he regarded writing as a secondary profession. From 1796 - 1804 Galt worked as a junior justice clerk in Greenock before setting off for London on a sudden impulse of restless ambition. Here he studied political economy and commercial history and practise but failed to really make his mark on the business world despite several promising ventures. Around the age of twenty-four Galt began writing. He experimented in verse but was an inferior poet. Several of his essays, however, were published and this writing at this time demonstrates his early interest in politics and the colonies, particularly Canada which had long captured his imagination.

Ayrshire is the birthplace of Robert Burns, the National Poet of Scotland. He was born in the village of Alloway on 25th January 1759, in a thatched cottage built by his father. Ayrshire abounds with places connected with the poet, so much so that it is difficult to move within the boundaries of Ayrshire without coming into contact or being reminded of his influence and popularity in the region. His birthplace in Alloway, some two miles from the county town of Ayr, is the ideal starting point for any tour of the Ayrshire Land of Burns. Using the Burns National Heritage Park as a base you can visit the thatched cottage, referred to as the 'Auld Clay Biggin', which has been restored to its original setting as it was in the poet's time. Banks are probably the best bet for exchanging currency, as they tend to have better rates. You can also change money at airports, larger rail stations, travel agents, some larger hotels and Tourist Information Offices. Bureaux de Change often charge a handling fee and commission. Scottish banks open Monday to Friday between 0900/1000 hours and close 1600/1700 hours with some open later on Thursday and on Saturday mornings. All Scottish bank notes are normally accepted in the rest of Britain, and the Bank of England and Northern Ireland bank notes are legal tender in Scotland. If you feel that you have received good service, for example at a restaurant, a tip of around 10% can be left (unless a service charge has already been included). Taxi drivers are often tipped.
