In 1911, Frost sold his farm; he took his family to Scotland and London in the fall of 1912, a trip that proved invaluable to his writing career. Despite trouble getting his work published in America, Frost found a willing publisher in London, and A Boy's Will appeared in 1913.

Robert Frost - (1874-1963) San Francisco By Erin Cuneo
San Pedro High School in San Pedro, California I. Biography Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874, in San Francisco, California. His father was a newspaper editor who died when Robert was 10 years old. Young Frost and his mother went to live with his grandfather in Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 1892, Frost graduated from Lawrence High School as class poet and as co-valedictorian with a brilliant young woman named Elinor Miriam White, whom he married three years later. He wanted to dedicate himself to the life of a poet even before his graduation from high school. However, his one grandfather was determined to make a lawyer out of him and persuaded him to enter Dartmouth College in the fall of 1892. Frost left Dartmouth before he completed his first semester. During the next few years, he earned his living by occasionally teaching school, working as a bobbin boy in a Lawrence wool mill, trying to be a newspaper reporter, and doing odd jobs. After his marriage to Elinor White in 1895 at the age of 21, he spent two years helping his mother operate a small private school in Lawrence. He then entered Harvard University because he wanted to become a more advanced teacher. However, he only spent two years there.

The Road Not Taken
American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963) reads "The Road Not Taken," "The Pasture," "Mowing," "Birches," "After Apple-Picking," and "The Tuft of Flowers." Set in rural New England, Frost's poetry uses ordinary events and objects from his life in New England as metaphors for complex ideas and feelings. "The Road Not Taken" presents the classic choice of a moment and a lifetime, while "The Tuft of Flowers" explores the meaning of common human experiences. Frost, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943, described a poem as "a momentary stay against confusion." These straightforward but intense readings were made in 1956 at Frost's home.
The Death of the Hired Man
American poet Robert Frost reads "West-Running Brook" and "The Death of the Hired Man." These poems, really miniature plays, use a rural New England milieu to express deeper emotional themes of human relationships and the imminence of death. Frost, who was born in 1874 and died in 1963, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943. He once described a poem as "a momentary stay against confusion." These readings were recorded in 1956 at Frost's home.

Print Preview of Section Frost, Robert (1874-1963), American poet, who drew his images from the New England countryside and his language from New England speech. Although Frost’s images and voice often seem familiar and old, his observations have an edge of skepticism and irony that make his work, upon rereading, never as old-fashioned, easy, or carefree as it first appears. In being both traditional and skeptical, Frost’s poetry helped provide a link between the American poetry of the 19th century and that of the 20th century. See also American Literature: Poetry II

Print Preview of Section Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California, the son of William Prescott Frost, Jr., of New Hampshire and Isabelle Moodie of Scotland. He was named after Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate armies during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When Frost was 11 years old, his father died of tuberculosis. The Frost family then moved to Massachusetts, where William Frost wanted to be buried. Frost attended high school in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and began writing poetry. He attended Dartmouth College briefly but withdrew during his first year and went to work. In 1895 he married Elinor White. The couple eventually had six children, two of whom died young. From 1897 to 1899 Frost attended Harvard College, but he left before receiving a degree. In the early 1900s the family owned a small poultry farm in New Hampshire, and Frost taught at a small private school nearby.

He used New England idioms, characters, and settings, recalling the roots of American culture, to get at universal experience. Robert Frost was born in San Francisco on March 26, 1874. His father came from prerevolutionary Maine and New Hampshire stock but hated New England because the Civil War it had supported had robbed his own father of employment in the cotton mill economy. When Frost's father graduated from Harvard in 1872, he left New England. He paused in Lewistown, Pa., to teach and married another teacher, Isabelle Moodie, a Scotswoman. They moved to San Francisco, where the elder Frost became an editor and politician. Their first child was named for the Southern hero Gen. Robert E. Lee. When Frost's father died in 1884, his will stipulated burial in New England. His wife and two children, Robert and Jeanie, went east for the funeral. .....
