Search all of Robert Frost Robert Frost (1874-1963) was one of the finest of rural New England's 20th century pastoral poets. Frost published his first books in Great Britain in the 1910s, but he soon became in his own country the most read and constantly anthologized poet. Frost was awarded the Pulitzer Prize four times.
Robert Frost was born in San Francisco, California on March 26, 1874. His father, a journalist and local politician, died when Frost was eleven years old. His Scottish mother resumed her career as a schoolteacher to support her family. The family lived in Lawrence, Massachusetts, with Frost's paternal grandfather. In 1892 Frost graduated from a high school and attended Dartmouth College for a few months. Over the next ten years he held a number of jobs.
In 1894 the New York Independent published Frost's poem "My Butterfly" and he had five poems privately printed. In 1895 he married a former schoolmate, Elinor White; they had six children. Frost worked as a teacher and continued to write and publish his poems in magazines. From 1897 to 1899 Frost studied at Harvard, but left without receiving a degree. He moved to Derry, New Hampshire, working there as a cobbler, farmer, and teacher at Pinkerton Academy and at the state normal school in Plymouth.
In 1912 Frost sold his farm and took his wife and four young children to England. There he published his first collection of poems

Students generally respond well to the basic emotional or psychological experiences expressed in Frost's poems. Some of themfor example, ones who have had a philosophy course or twomay raise questions about the implications of poems like "Design." Students often have difficulty appreciating (a) the skill and subtlety with which Frost uses traditional poetic devices such as rhyme and meter; (b) the sparse pleasures he discovers in some of his rural and natural subjects; (c) the bleakness and/or ambiguity of his more "philosophical" poems. Sometimes they also have difficulty understanding that the values he presented in his poems were derived from a type of community or society that was very different from their own: one that was rural, fearful of change, distrustful of technology, proud of craftsmanship, and deeply committed to privacy and self-reliance. Regarding the formal devices and ambiguity, there is no substitute for traditional "close reading." (Quotes from Frost's essays, "The Constant Symbol" and "The Figure a Poem Makes" can be helpful in this regard.) The sparse pleasures can be seen in poems like "The Pasture" and "The Investment," and the bleakness can be discerned in the endings of "Once by the Pacific" and "Desert Places." The social values can be seen in dramatic poems like "The Fear" and "The Ax-Helve," as well as in "Mending Wall."

, poet and critic. Although Frost is closely linked with the New England region, it was in England that he published his first collections, A Boy's Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914). He and his wife and children had moved there in 1912 after Frost had been unable to make a living in a variety of occupations or to find a publisher for his poems in the United States. The son of an alcoholic and sporadically brutal father who died early, leaving his family in poverty, Frost had had a difficult childhood, and this was reflected in his financial and emotional problems after his school years. Clearly a depressive, he funneled his energies into his art. While living in England, he found companionship among the post-Georgian poets there and was admired by such critics and poets as Ezra Pound, Amy Lowell, and Ford Madox Ford. His work, distinctive in its combination of traditional form with a unique, recognizable voice, coincided with the aesthetic movement known as imagism, and young experimental poets were glad to claim his work as a corollary to theirs. When Frost returned to the United States in 1915, he was a significant modern poet. The life he then led in New England—farming, teaching, giving readings, in spite of what was still a difficult family life because of children's illnesses and death—enabled him to become one of America's most important poets. No other writer has received four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry or the number of accolades from universities and foundations that Frost did. The public Frost—humorous, witty, nonintellectual—was quite different from the real Frost—well educated, cynical, and sometimes cruel—but the tensions and conflicts of his life seem to have been resolved in the high polish of his distinctive poems.

  • Born: 26 March 1874 Birthplace: San Francisco, California Died: 29 January 1963 Best Known As: American poet who wrote "The Road Not Taken"
The poetry of Robert Frost combined pastoral imagery with solitary philosophical themes and was often associated with rural New England. Frost was one of the most popular poets in America during his lifetime and was frequently called the country's unofficial poet laureate. He was farming in Derry, New Hampshire when, at the age of 38, he sold the farm, uprooted his family and moved to England, where he devoted himself to his poetry. His first two books of verse, A Boy's Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914), were immediate successes. In 1915 he returned to the United States and continued to publish poems that were both popular and critical successes. His poems include "Mending Wall" ("good fences make good neighbors"), "Birches," "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" ("Whose woods these are I think I know"), and "The Road Not Taken." Frost was awarded the Pulitzer Prize four times: in 1924, 1931, 1937 and 1943. He also served as "Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress" from 1958-59; that position was renamed as "Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry" in 1986.
