Freud, Sigmund
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was not a literary theorist, but he was the important thinker of whom W. H. Auden could write: "to us he is no more a person / now but a whole climate of opinion / under whom we conduct our different lives" ("In Memory of Sigmund Freud [d. Sept. 1939]," Collected Poems, sexualitychanged forever humanity's confidence in its mastery and control of the self.
Although Freud was not in any way a deliberate aesthetic theorist, he did leave his mark on both literature and critical theory through his general psychoanalytic framework and also his specific turning to art to show that the range of applicability of psychoanalysis extended beyond dreams and neurosis to even the highest cultural achievements. Freud had always been interested in literature. Although in his "Contribution to a Questionnaire on Reading" he listed the works of Copernicus and Charles Darwin under the heading "most significant books," he also ranked the poems and plays of Homer, Sophocles, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and William Shakespeare under "most magnificent works" (9:245-47). These, it should be noted, were the works that had provided him with his best illustrations of psychoanalytic theories.
In 1912 Freud founded Imago

Personal Testimony
I remember in my undergraduate education classes being required to take psychology. In the introductory courses we learned mostly about basic psychology theory and the theorist. The major pyschiatrist discussed was Sigmond Freud. Unfortunately, ten years after those courses I am left with remembering Freud as having to do with the "id, ego and super ego, and Freudian slips." This is my attempt at determining who Sigmund Freud was, what was his belief in regards to humand and psychology, what effects his work has had on education and psychology and my personal connections to his theories. Max Uhls' Personal Testimony - I, too, remember taking some Psych classes, but vaguely. What I remember from those classes about Freud included his work on the id, ego, and super-ego and some dream interpretation, but also that many of his discoveries about psychology were inspired while under the influence of serious drugs - cocaine, perhaps. I also remember him being referred to as a sex-aholic, as many of his dream interpretations involved sex or were somehow sex-related. My contributions to site is to better inform those who wish to know more of Freud.

Biographical Sketch
Sigmund Freud with his Mother and Wife Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939), Austrian physician, neurologist, and founder of psychoanalysis. Freud was born in Freiberg (now Príbor, Czech Republic), on May 6, 1856, and educated at the University of Vienna. When he was three years old his family, fleeing from the anti-Semitic riots then raging in Freiberg, moved to Leipzig. Shortly thereafter, the family settled in Vienna, where Freud remained for most of his life. Although Freud's ambition from childhood had been a career in law, he decided to become a medical student shortly before he entered the University of Vienna in 1873. Inspired by the scientific investigations of the German poet Goethe, Freud was driven by an intense desire to study natural science and to solve some of the challenging problems confronting contemporary scientists. In his third year at the university Freud began research work on the central nervous system in the physiological laboratory under the direction of the German physician Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke. Neurological research was so engrossing that Freud neglected the prescribed courses and as a result remained in medical school three years longer than was required normally to qualify as a physician. In 1881, after completing a year of compulsory military service, he received his medical degree. Unwilling to give up his experimental work, however, he remained at the university as a demonstrator in the physiological laboratory. In 1883, at Brücke's urging, he reluctantly abandoned theoretical research to gain practical experience.

Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939)
page: Sigmund Freud is the founder of psychoanalysis and the discoverer of the unconscious. With his epoch-making contributions he initiated a fundamental transformation in the self-understanding of Western men and women. In his lifetime, Freud published 24 books and 123 articles containing some 90 specifically Freudian concepts that form the core of his theory. With this corpus and thanks to a carefully planned strategy for disseminating his ideas, Freud exerted a profound influence in all branches of the arts and humanities. Sponsor Message.
As one of the most outstanding researchers and thinkers of the twentieth century, Freud has received critical attention from a wide range of perspectives. While many of his earlier critics focused on Freud's naturalistic conception of man and on his whole-hearted acceptance of the scientific worldview, contemporary analysis of his writings has convincingly exposed the patriarchal structures that underlie his most distinctive theories and the restrictions that heterosexual teleology imposes on his conception of sexuality. Of late, a keener awareness of the complexity of the Freudian texts has led to a recognition that some of his basic insights can be turned against his own overall structuring principles, so that new theoretical spaces can be envisioned beyond the scope of what Freud himself was prepared to acknowledge.

Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939)
page: With the introduction of this duality, Freud broaches a conception of psychic life that alternates between the affirmation of life and its dialectical negation, death conceived as the aim of life. By drawing death within the explicit scope of psychoanalytical theory, Freud produced one of his most powerful arguments to counter the often raised objection concerning his supposed pansexualism. Psychoanalysis and Sexual Difference Some of his most innovative ideas of the 1920s Freud regarded as "speculations" or "working hypotheses" worth considering, although not necessarily sustained by previous psychoanalytical theory. Focusing on such hypotheses, Herbert Marcuse in Eros and Civilization (1957) sought to develop the "philosophy of psychoanalysis" implicit in Freud's theory of man. In Marcuse's interpretation, issues such as the revaluation of fantasy and the aesthetic dimension, the redefinition of progress, and the reassessment of the role of play in a non-repressive culture define the core of Freud's emancipatory potential.
