Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939
Sigmund Freud, the Austrian founder of psychoanalysis, the Copernicus of the Mind , and father of Anna Freud, was born at Freiburg, Moravia, of Jewish parents. Inspired by Goethe's essay on nature, Freud studied medicine at Vienna but original work in physiology delayed his graduation until 1881. He then specialized in neurology and, stimulated by the discoveries of the Viennese physician Josef Breuer, that hysteria can be cured by making a patient recall painful memories under hypnosis, studied under Jean Martin Charcot in Paris (1885) and changed over from neurology to psychopathology. Upon his return to Vienna he published two studies on aphasia and cerebral paralysis, before risking, with Breuer, the joint publication of Studien über Hysterie Finding hypnosis inadequate, Freud gradually substituted the method of free association , allowing his patients to ramble on with his or her thoughts when in a state of relaxed consciousness and, interpreting the data, an abundance of childhood and dream recollections. He became convinced of the fact of infantile sexuality. This became the basis of his theory and cost him his friendship with Breuer (1897), lost him many patients and isolated him from the conservative medical profession. He worked on alone, publishing in 1900 his greatest work, The Interpretation of Dreams , an exhaustive study of dream material, including his own, which showed that dreams, like neuroses, are disguised manifestations of repressed wishes of a sexual origin.

The Web Editor's comments: any academic study of Freud should include some of the criticism that has been increasingly appearing in recent times. A good collection of this can be found in Unauthorized Freud , edited by Frederick Crews (Penguin Books).

After Sigmund Freud returned to Vienna, he set up a practice in neuropsychiatry. He started to work in psychological fields concerning the conscious mind and earned recognition with his revolutionary theories of the id, the ego and the superego and his work with psychoanalysis. In 1938, after Austria was affiliated by Nazi Germany, Sigmund Freud, being a famous Jewish scientist had no choice, but to immigrate to the United Kingdom. He stayed there until he died of cancer in 1939. Freud's work was revolutionary at his times and especially adopted in the United States, where they are still basis to most modern psychological treatments. Nowadays, his theories are somewhat challenged as being too focused on sexual processes. His importance as the father of psychoanalysis can't be denied. Furthermore, his publications on hysteria, the working of jokes, Oedipus complex or the interpretation of dreams are written in elegant and precise German, they are a good read!

Freud and Beyond : A History of Modern Psychoanalytic Thought
by Stephen A. Mitchell, Margaret J. Black (Contributor). Mitchell's review of the lasting importance and revolutionary impact of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytical theories struck a deep cord within me. Informative, lucid and surprisingly well-paced, this history of the modern journey into the mind emerged as an abbreviated form of clinical therapy for the curious, yet, perhaps psychologically unsuspecting reader. I came out of this book feeling that I had spent years lying on a couch in Vienna. As an introduction into an intimidating and vast field, "Freud and Beyond" gently guides its student into an appreciative approach to psychoanalysis and its profound impact on modern thought... anonymous review Click here to learn more about this book

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) Sigmund Freud was born on the 6th May 1856 into a Jewish family in Freiberg, Moravia (now in Czechoslovakia) and was the eldest of eight children. When he was three the family moved to Vienna where was educated and lived until a year before he died. Although he did not practice the Jewish religion, and later dismissed all religion as the product of psychological imbalance (see The Freudian Theory of Religion ), he was aware of his Jewish heritage, made only a few friends who were themselves non-Jews and regularly attended meetings at his local Jewish society. In 1873 he enrolled at the University of Vienna to do medical studies which he completed in 1881. From 1876 to 1892 he undertook research in the Psychological Institute of Ernst Brucke, who was the founder of Mechanism (this being the theory that all vital processes could be explained in terms of physics and chemistry rather than religion and biology - for information on related themes see Determinism and Freewill ), and worked for a time in neurology under Theodor Meynert. It was also during this time that he researched the anathestic effects of cocaine in medicine (1884-87). In 1885 Freud was given the opportunity to work with Jean Martin Charcot in Paris who was researching so called nervous diseases. He was particularly concerned with hysteria (Greek:

"The voice of the intellect is soft one, but it does not rest until it has gained a hearing. Ultimately, after endless rebuffs, it succeeds. This is one of the few points in which one may be optimistic about the future of mankind."
    (Sigmund Freud / 1856-1939 / The Future of an Illusion / 1927)
"Our knowledge of the historical worth of certain religious doctrines increases our respect for them, but does not invalidate our proposal that they should cease to be put forward as the reasons for the precepts of civilization. On the contrary! Those historical residues have helped us to view religious teachings, as it were, as neurotic relics, and we may now argue that the time has probably come, as it does in an analytic treatment, for replacing the effects of repression by the results of the rational operation of the intellect."

Born in Freiburg, Moravia, to Jewish parents who moved to Vienna when he was 4, Freud entered the University of Vienna in 1873, where he studied for a career in medical research, and worked in Paris in 1885-1886 with Jean-Marie Charcot. His ideas on the psychosexual etiology of neurosis appeared in Studies in Hysteria (with Josef Breuer) in 1895, while his full psychoanalytic theory of mental processes emerged in his masterpiece, The Interpretation of Dreams (1900). His analysis of the unconscious dynamics behind dreams and his idea that the dream is the disguised expression of an unfulfilled wish laid the theoretical foundation for his later cultural studies. Freud maintained a strong Jewish ethnic identity, yet from an early date he was also an atheist. He wrote psychoanalytic studies of religious topics, yet viewed religion with suspicion. His work on The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901) already contained illuminating discussions of popular superstitions. The essays collected in
