Harold Frederic (1856-1898)
Article # : Section : BOOK WORLD Issue Date : 707 Words Author : James Thompson
James Thompson, who lives in Nashville, is the author of several books, the most recent of which is The Church, the South and the Future.
Along with Stephen Crane and Frank Norris, Harold Frederic belonged to what Larzer Ziff, in his book The American 1890s, described as the original lost generation of American literature. Hungry for fame and gifted with talents to match their hunger, these men evinced a fierce passion for living and writing, but they died early, the living too short to contain all the writing left undone.
Of the three novelists, Frederic had the most time (he was forty-one when he died in 1898), but his legacy was the slimmest and his renown the most fleeting. No single novel of his equals Crane's The Red Badge of Courage or Norris' The Octopus, nor does his work as a whole measure up to theirs. But his achievement is not negligible. In a cluster of novels published between 1887 and 1896, he claimed a spot on the literary map for the region around Utica, New York, the locus of his fiction, and in The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896) he fashioned a novel still worth reading.

In 1875, Frederic began work as a proofreader for the Utica Herald and then the Utica Daily Observer . Among his early publications in the Observer are five short stories (all appearing between 1876 and 1879) and fifteen articles, twelve of which address sensational subjects, such as murders and hangings. At the age of 24, Frederic was named editor of the Utica Daily Observer , a position he held from 1880 until 1882, when he took over the editorship of the more prestigious Albany Evening Journal Fiercely in favor of reform and frustrated with the machine politics that nominated Republican Charles J. Folger for Governor over the popular incumbent, Frederic, as editor of the Albany Evening Journal Albany Evening Journal New York Times Three years after relocating to England, Frederic published his first novel, In the Valley The Lawton Girl was also published in early 1890. Henry David Thoreau Thoreau's advice seems particularly applicable to today's world where the proliferation of all forms of literary material creates a dilemma for the person attempting to choose something to read. With this advice in mind, the Network Services Section has produced a series of three minibibliographies listing the best of American fiction. This first minibibliography of the series lists fiction of America's early period, particularly of the mid-to-late- nineteenth century when the American novel came of age. American writers had finally freed themselves from imitating the themes and characterizations of the English and established their own literary form with two great masterpieces: Herman Melville's Moby Dick and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. From these novels, American literature moved on to the social and political satire of Mark Twain in Huckleberry Finn and the new realism of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Frank Norris. Books chosen for this minibibliography are based upon the recommendations offered in Good Reading, edited by J. Sherwood Weber; The Reader's Advisor, 12th edition, volume 1; "Darien's First 'Classics' Collection," from Library Journal, November 15, 1981; and American Novel, Brown to James, edited by Frank N. Magill.
