Frederic's critically acclaimed but unlucrative first novel concerns political corruption and a love triangle in upstate New York. First published in Scribner's Magazine , the story is noteworthy for its depiction of country life as dismal and constricting. Frederic was a journalist, editor, and, in 1884, London correspondent for the New York Times In the Valley . This novel is a realistic depiction of the Battle of Oriskany during the American Revolution in 1777. Frederic also publishes The Lawton Girl , about a young woman's tarnished reputation in a small New York town. The Copperhead . This is the first in a series of Frederic's popular novels treating the Civil War from the perspective of noncombatants. It would be followed by Marsena (1894) and In the Sixties The Damnation of Theron Ware . Frederic's most admired work is this novel about a Methodist minister whose faith is shaken under the pressure of modern ideas. Frederic also publishes March Hare , a romantic novel of English life.

Biographical Note
American journalist and novelist. Frederic did not receive a divorce from his first wife, Grace Williams, and took her and their children to London. But while there, he established a relationship with Kate Forman. He maintained both households in England until he died there in 1898, and was survived by children from each. Kate became part of his social and literary world, developing a close friendship with his friends, Stephen and Cora Crane, which continued after Frederic's death.

Scope and Contents
Letters, manuscript, photographs, art work, and printed materials concerning Frederic. There are two letters, 1892-1896, from Frederic while he was in London as correspondent for the New York Times, to W. Sheaming of the National Liberation Club and to a London book publisher. A manuscript genealogy of early English families, primarily of the 13th century, probably deals with his ancestors. There is also a photograph of his common-law wife, Kate Lyon Forman, and biographical material on their daughter, Helen Forman.
