Tijdens deze periode las Benjamin veel boeken, waaronder, Pilgrims Progress, Parallel Lives, Essay on Projects, Essays to do Good, en Spectator.

    Benjamin Franklin
was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston Massachusetts. Franklin was one of the leading founding fathers of the United States of America. He signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, and served as the new nation's ablest diplomat. Franklin's formal schooling ended early but his education never did. He believed that "the doors to wisdom are never shut," and read every book he could get his hands on. Franklin taught himself simple algebra and geometry, navigation, logic, history, science, English grammar and a working knowledge of five other languages. Franklin had a simple formula for success. He believed that successful people worked just a little harder than other people. Benjamin Franklin certainly did. He built a successful printing and publishing business in Philadelphia; he conducted scientific studies of electricity and made several important discoveries; he was an accomplished diplomat and statesman; he helped establish Pennsylvania's first university and America's first city hospital. He also organized the country's first subscription library. Franklin was also unequaled in America as an inventor until Thomas Edison . He invented the Franklin stove, bifocal eyeglasses and the lightning rod. Franklin wasn't greedy about his inventions, preferring to have them used freely for the comfort and convenience of everyone. Thomas Jefferson called Benjamin Franklin "the greatest man and ornament of the age and country in which he lived."

On the Shoulders of Giants Benjamin Franklin Franklin s Climate Studies Links and References Top A portrait of Benjamin Franklin. By Roger Kammerer
    http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Library/Giants/Franklin/
In 1752, Franklin, along with his son William, performed his famous kite-flying experiment which proved that lightning is a naturally-occurring electrical phenomenon. The kite was constructed with a sharp metallic wire situated on top and at the end of the kite string, and a key tied to the end of the string with a silk ribbon. When Franklin saw loose threads on the kite string stand up, he grounded the makeshift insulated conductor by touching his knuckle to the metal key on the string. Consequently, he observed a passing spark between his knuckle and the key, which presented the final proof of lightning's electrical nature. Miraculously, the charge was not strong enough to be fatal to Franklin or his son. (Under normal circumstances, a lightning strike can instantly kill any individuals bold enough to fly a kite during a thunderstorm.) next: Franklin's Climate Studies On the Shoulders of Giants

    Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was a philosopher, scientist, inventor, printer, musician, economist and statesman. He was leading author of the Franklin Commission Report that debunked Anton Mesmer 's fanciful theories of so-called animal magenetism . During the first half of the 19th century, desperate patients and even their surgeons continued to use the hypnotic techniques of Mesmerism despite their manifest limitations. Only the " Yankee Dodge " of etherization eclipsed Mesmerism for good.
