Middlesex 226 is actually an election medalet prepared by Wyon and manufactured by Kempson for the Westminster Parliamentary contest of 1796. Admiral Alan Gardner [ later Lord Gardner , 1742 - 1809 ] used the token design to promote his candidacy against Liberal Charles James Fox and Radical John Horne Tooke. The token may have helped Gardner, who was elected along with Fox. All three candidates went on to distinguished careers.
Alan Gardner was made an Irish Lord in 1800 and became Commander of the Channel Fleet in 1807. Charles James Fox [ 1749 - 1806 ] was the main political opposition to William Pitt and the Crown during his long Parliamentary career. He championed the American colonists and the French Revolution along with other often unpopular Liberal causes. John Horne Tooke [ 1736 - 1812 ] was a prominent political Radical, imprisoned in 1777 for libelling the Royal troops in America and acquitted of High Treason in a famous 1794 trial. He reached Parliament in 1801 from Old Sarum.

Republican Generation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Republican Generation is the name given to that generation of Americans born from to by William Strauss and Neil Howe in their book Generations . They grew up as the precious object of adult protection during the French and Indian Wars , an era of rising crime and social disorder. They came of age highly regarded for their secular optimism and spirit of cooperation . As young adults, they achieved glory as soldiers in the American Revolutionary War , brilliance as scientists , order as civic planners, and epic success as state-crafters. Trusted by elders and aware of their own role in history , they led the campaign to ratify the United States Constitution and filled all the early cabinet posts. In midlife, they built canals and acquired territories, while their orderly Federalist and rational Republican leaders made America a "workshop of liberty". As elders, they chafed at passionate youths bent on repudiating much of what they had built. The Republicans' typical grandparents were of the Enlightenment Generation . Their parents were of the Awakening Generation and Liberty Generation . Their children were of the Compromise Generation and Transcendental Generation and their typical grandchildren were of the Gilded Generation Altogether, about 2.1 million Americans were born from 1742 to 1766. 17 percent were immigrants and 17 percent were slaves at any point in their lives.

Charles James Fox
A powerful voice within the Whig party in England from the period of the Revolution through to the end of the 18th century, Charles James Fox was the epitome of a rake of his time and is often remembered as much for his gambling, drinking and pursuit of women as for his politics. This, naturally, made him irresistible to Ban Tarleton, who gravitated to his political circle after the end of the war and remained in it loyally through the 1790s, when many others deserted the failing Whig party. The two men also had a connection through Mary Robinson , who was Fox's lover for a time in 1782, and seems to have drifted back and forth between them before she and Fox went opposite ways. (Their sexual liaison is sometimes denied by Fox's biographers, but was certainly accepted as a reality by his friends, judging by various bits of correspondence.) Son of Lord Holland and a daughter of the Duke of Richmond, Fox began his political career as a Tory, but between 1772 and 1774, his personal dislike of George III and radical notions pushed him gradually towards the Whigs. He spent most of his active political career in opposition, gaining fame as one of the finest orators of the age. However, he was too fond of a private life dominated by self-indulgence, and too lacking in professional ambition, to be a successful politician. Short and heavy
