Expert Analysis by Dr. James A Mackay One of Burns's earliest songs with strong political overtones is the Ballad on the American War. It seems to have been composed in 1784, barely months after the struggle between the American colonies and the mother country had been brought to an end. Vigorous and well-crafted, it was one of Burns's best compositions of the early period but it was too sensitive politically for inclusion in the Kilmarnock Edition. In December 1786 Burns wrote to Henry Erskine, the Dean of Faculty and one of his new-found Edinburgh friends: -
Erskine concurred and, as a result, it was included in the first Edinburgh Edition. Interestingly, the air which Burns selected for it was known at that time as the Earl of Glencairn's, having been published under that title in McGlashan's Strathspey Reels (1780), although nowadays it is better known by its original name of The Black Watch. Many later editions of the works of Burns, however, preferred the rollicking Jacobite melody Killiecrankie instead.
As a summary of events in North America over the preceding decade it is without peer for sharp observation tinged with biting wit. To readers in 1787 it would have possessed the extra advantage of immediacy; they would all have been quite familiar with the personalities and events it depicted and would relish the sly digs and allusions which are lost on a present-day audience who do not have an intimate knowledge of the period. So let us take it line by line and see what sense we can make of it.

91. Earls And Dukes Of Richmond
was the father of Lady Caroline Lennox who eloped with Henry Fox, becoming the mother of Charles James Fox (British statesman and orator 17491806).
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/parade/hq69/Pages/h_earl.html
The title Earl of Richmond (Richemund from the original French) dates from shortly after the Norman Conquest (1066) and initially was honorary or stylistic in nature rather than legal. (The image above is from the famous Bayeaux tapestry). The lands, manors and possession that came to be known as the honour of Richmond were wrested from the English following the Norman Conquest in 1066. For more than three hundred years the honour was then controlled by the dukes of Brittany or their relatives. What is clear is that the various earls and dukes of Richmond were in general close to sources of power within the kingdom. Today one can but speculate at the intrigue and politics that lay behind the decisions taken by the regent of the day in his appointment of various successors. Eudon, brother to Alan III, Duke of Brittany (997 to 1040) disputed the ducal title. The dispute continued when the Dukedom passed to Conan II (1040 to 1066) but was resolved with the partition of the family's lands and the creation of a separate title the "Count of Brittany". Two of Eudon's sons both "counts of Brittany" took part in the Norman invasion of England. One of these was Alan Rufus the other was Alan Niger (d. 1093). William the Conqueror rewarded Alan Rufus (shown in the Great Hall at Richmond Castle ) with grants of land and manors that formerly had been in the possession of Earl Edwin in Yorkshire. The estates were formed into the honour of Richmond.

It was a 29" x 24" (sight size) British painting of Dr. William Small by Tilly Kettle (1734 or 1735-1786), signed in the lower right "Kettle Pinxit," meaning "Kettle painted it." William Small was a professor of natural philosophy and mathematics at William & Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia, who taught mathematics to the young Thomas Jefferson. Of Small, Jefferson wrote, "It was my great good fortune, and what probably fixed the destinies of my life, that Dr. Wm. Small of Scotland was then professor of mathematics, a man profound in most of the useful branches of science, with a happy talent of communication, correct and gentlemanly manners, & an enlarged & liberal mind. He, most happily for me, became soon attached to me & made me his daily companion…and from his conversation I got my first views of the expansion of science & the system of things in which we are placed." Marmion A 12" x 31½" painting signed J.F. Cafferata showing beachfront buildings with signs, one of which read "Whittaker’s Dining & Refreshment Rooms," was offered. It was part of the Katharine Hepburn estate sale at Sotheby’s on June 11, 2004, where it brought $7200. Here, with some restoration, the work jumped to a remarkable $20,900. Veilleux believes it represents a New Brunswick scene, with small knots of people enjoying various oceanside activities.

British politician who supported American independence and the French Revolution. Encyclopedia Fox, Charles James, 1749–1806, British statesman and orator, for many years the outstanding parliamentary proponent of liberal reform. He entered Parliament in 1768 and served as lord of the admiralty (1770–72) and as lord of the treasury (1772–74) under Frederick, Lord North . Dismissed by George III, he went into bitter opposition, lending his remarkable oratorical genius to the attack on North's policy in North America. Despite the king's objection, he became foreign secretary in the marquess of Rockingham's Whig ministry (1782) and helped to secure the repeal of Poynings's Law (see under Poynings, Sir Edward ), thus giving Ireland legislative independence. He quarreled with the earl of Shelburne over the negotiation of peace with the former American colonies, France, and Spain, and he resigned when Shelburne succeeded Rockingham. Fox then allied himself with his old enemy, Lord North, to insure Shelburne's defeat, and he became (1783) foreign secretary again, in a coalition with North. This ministry fell in the same year, when George III brought his influence to bear in the House of Lords to secure defeat of Fox's bill vesting the government of India in a commission nominated by Parliament. He was replaced in office by William Pitt, whom he bitterly opposed for the rest of his life.

The Burns Encyclopedia Home Introduction A B ... U V W X Y Z
A politician regarded in Burns's day as the supporter of liberty for the people, and the opponent of Tory junta oppression. Fox enjoyed periods of popularity, which he lost again owing to his coalition with North, his support of the India Bill, and on its rejection, his attempts to prevent an appeal to the country. Burns mentions him in 'A Dream', a satire based upon a pompous official birthday 'Laureate's Ode' by the then Poet Laureate, Thomas Wharton. Burns addresses the future George IV.
