Charles James Fox (1749-1806) statesman, third son of Henry Fox, first Baron Holland. Educated at Eton and Hertford College, Oxford and in 1768 elected MP for Midhurst. In 1770 he became a member of the Board of the Admiralty under North but seldom bothered to attend. In 1780 Fox was elected MP for Westminster which city he continued, with a slight interruption, to represent till his death. In 1789 he asserted that the Prince of Wales had a right to the Regency. It is possible that Fox's electors supported his attempt to make a new Administration against Pitt, who was opposed to the Prince of Wales as Regent. p. 75, British Historical Medals 1760-1960 Volume 1 This token's a bit scuffed up but the first of three I've been able to acquire with Fox as a subject. BHM mentions that it was manufactured by W. Lutwyche.

Westmacott's principal work is the monument for the statesman Charles James Fox (1749-1806), who had been a Member of the Parliament, became a lord of the Admiralty, and from 1772-74 was a commissioner of the Treasury. Among his notable merits were his attempts to abolish the slave trade and his support for the rights of the North American colonies. Westmacott pictorialized three basic elements of Fox's political career. Fox dies in the arms of the allegory of Liberty (the high point of the group); leaning over his feet is the mourning allegory of Peace; and the African squats before him for his forceful intervention on behalf of his race.

Remembered today for his gambling and his friendship with the Duchess of Devonshire's set almost as much as for his politics, Fox was nevertheless one of the most progressive Whig politicians of his day. He advocated a more liberal and egalitarian policy towards the American colonies and to Ireland, desired greater tolerance towards Roman Catholics, and declared the fall of the Bastille "the greatest event that ever happened in the world." During Rockingham's administration of 1782, Fox had effectively become Britain's first modern Foreign Minister; in 1783 he overcame his earlier enmity with Lord North to join his government in the same capacity.

As the letter is undated, it is unfortunately impossible to be certain which incident prompted Fox's remarks about a battle off Brest. The French port was blockaded by the British until the peace of Amiens in 1802. However, part of the British fleet was again to be found off Brest in July 1805. The decisive naval battle of the Napoleonic wars would not be fought off Brest, but three months later, at Trafalgar.
The address leaf is slightly torn where the seal has been broken. The letter is otherwise in clear, fresh condition.

His only serious literary work was a fragment of a proposed History of the Reign of James the Second. An introductory chapter sketching the development of the constitution from the time of Henry VII., and a few chapters conducting the history up to the execution of Monmouth are all which he completed.
