Charles James Fox, 1749-1806: A Bibliography

Schweitzer, David
Charles James Fox, the standard bearer of the reform Whig opposition in the late eighteenth century, was among the most colorful politicians of his era and perhaps its most arresting orator. Despite a career marked by shifting alliances and misadventures, Fox is best known for his advocacy of the Libel Bill, which is a milestone in the history of English law; for his support of Catholic emancipation and the abolition of slavery, measures that became law after his death; and for his dedication to the rights of the common man. This is the first comprehensive bibliography of Fox, the "man of the people," and it provides a guide to the manuscript and archival sources as well as his own writings and the extensive literature on his life and career. The volume is augmented by a biographical essay, chronology, and author and subject indexes. DOI:

Name: Charles James Fox Birth Date: Death Date: September 13, 1806 Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: member of parliament, politician Charles James Fox Main Biography The English parliamentarian Charles James Fox (1749-1806) won the reputation of being the champion of individual liberties against the oppressive tendencies of government and was known as the "Man of the People." The third son of Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland, Charles James Fox seemed destined almost from birth to follow his father's political career. Although he held high office for a shorter time than his father, he became more famous and far better loved. He also seemed destined to continue with William Pitt the Younger the intense political rivalry that their fathers had begun. Of his two older brothers, one died in infancy and the other was sickly, so the father heaped affection and attention on Charles. Overindulged in his youth, Charles never developed the qualities of restraint or self-discipline. Indeed, Charles's father apparently preferred to encourage a lack of inhibition, for he introduced his son at a tender age to an extravagant and dissipated way of life that was .....

CHARLES JAMES FOX
FOX, CHARLES JAMES (1749-1806), British statesman and orator, was the third son of Henry Fox, 1st Lord Holland, and his wife, Lady Caroline Lennox, eldest daughter of Charles Lennox, 2nd duke of Richmond. He was born at 9 Conduit Street, Westminster, on the 24th of January 1749. The father, who treated his children with extreme indulgence, allowed him to choose his school, and he elected to go to one kept at Wandsworth by a French refugee, named Pampelonne. In a very short time he asked to be sent to Eton, where he went in 1757. At Eton he did no more work than. was acceptable to him, but he had an inborn love of literature, and he laid the foundation of that knowledge of the classic languages which in after years was the delight of his life. The vehemence of his temper was controlled by an. affectionate disposition. When quite a boy la checked his own tendency to fits of passion on learning that hit father trusted him to cure his defects. nor to consent to the surrender of Sicily, which Napoleon insisted upon, unless full compensation could be obtained for King Ferdinand. The later stages of the negotiation were not directed by Fox, but by colleagues who took over his work at the foreign office when his health began to fail in the summer of 1806. He showed symptoms of dropsy, and operations only procured him temporary relief. After carrying his motion for the abolition of the slave trade on the 10th of June, he was forced to give up attendance in parliament, and he died in the house of the duke of Devonshire, at Chiswick, on the 13th of September 1806. His wife survived him till the 8th of July 1842. No children were born of the marriage. Fox is buried in Westminster Abbey by the side of Pitt.

CHARLES JAMES FOX
'Fox is a most extraordinary man... who has divided the kingdom with Caesar; so that it was a doubt whether the nation should be ruled by the sceptre of George the Third, or the tongue of Fox.'
Samuel Johnson The great political character of his age, Fox was a democratic Whig, an advocate of parliamentary reform and a strenuous opponent of the war with America. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the French Revolution and a prominent exponent of revolutionary principles throughout the 1790s. A friend and ally of the Prince of Wales, he was a hard-drinking gambler and almost constantly in debt. By the end of the 1790s he had no real political support, and led the opposition into effective retirement.
