41. REDFLAGSDAILY.COM - DAVID CROWE - Does Selenium Play A Role In AIDS?
Foster provides evidence that low selenium levels predict the occurrence of AIDS Foster, 2002 Foster HD. What really causes AIDS. Trafford Publishing.
http://www.aras.ab.ca/articles/rfw-aids-selenium.html
DAVID CROWE DOES SELENIUM PLAY A ROLE IN AIDS? By RFD Columnist, David Crowe According to Canadian Geography Professor Harold D. Foster, lack of the trace element selenium plays a role in causing AIDS. Well, lest you think that he is a true AIDS dissident, questioning any role for HIV in AIDS, he also believes that HIV causes AIDS. And he slams Peter Duesberg and other dyed-in-the-wool dissidents in order to establish his mainstream credentials. [Foster, 2002] Foster starts his book, What Really Causes AIDS After criticizing the declaration for being an attempt to impose a dogma. Foster thereby carves out a position as a critic on the edge of mainstream views, but not outside them. Foster claims that Hepatitis B and C, Coxsackie B and HIV-1 and HIV-2 viruses rely on a selenium-containing enzyme (selenoenzyme glutathione peroxidase) to function. One would think that a shortage of selenium would therefore hurt these viruses, but Foster believes that they can out-compete the rest of the body for this element, exacerbating the damage that low selenium levels do. This is the core of his theory; that HIV and a shortage of selenium are co-factors that jointly cause AIDS. Foster provides evidence that low selenium levels predict the occurrence of AIDS in Africa better than sexual practices (although, for a geographer, it is surprising that no map showing this association is included). In criticizing the theory that sexual transmission explains HIV infections and AIDS in Africa, he is echoing the criticisms of Gisselquist and others who have noted many anomalies in the association between heterosexual intercourse and AIDS in Africa, such as a lack of a strong association between the number of sexual partners and the disease, and the greater likelihood that a woman in a sexual partnership in Africa will be HIV+ than the man, even though men are more promiscuous. [Gisselquist, 2002]

As a constituent of selenoproteins, selenium has structural and enzymic roles, in the latter context being best-known as an antioxidant and catalyst for the production of active thyroid hormone. Selenium is needed for the proper functioning of the immune system, and appears to be a key nutrient in counteracting the development of virulence and inhibiting HIV progression to AIDS. It is required for sperm motility and may reduce the risk of miscarriage. Deficiency has been linked to adverse mood states. Conditions involving oxidative stress and inflammation have shown benefits of a higher selenium status.

    Biographical Sketch
Stephen Collins Foster, the ninth of William B. and Eliza T. Foster's ten children (plus a son fathered by William before the marriage and later raised as their oldest child), was born July 4, 1826, in a white cottage high on the hillside above the Allegheny River in Lawrenceville , east of Pittsburgh. The tenth child died as an infant, leaving Stephen as the "baby" of the family to be indulged by older brothers and sisters. Foster's life has become part of American legend . One thread of the tale is that he detested school and so was poorly educated. In truth, as a young boy Stephen evinced more interest in music than in other subjects. But as the child of a middle-class family in an era before tax-supported public education, he variously was privately tutored, then schooled at private academies in Pittsburgh and in north-central Pennsylvania. He expressed a distaste for rote learning and recitation, but was an avid reader and eventually became a literate, well-educated person by the standards of his day.

The population health perspective as a framework for studying child maltreatment outcomes
Lil Tonmyr, Harriet L MacMillan, Ellen Jamieson
and Katharine Kelly Abstract The population health perspective (PHP) is commonly used in addressing a wide range of health issues. In this article, the determinants of health that are an integral part of the PHP are used as a framework in considering the range of outcomes associated with exposure to child maltreatment. The article examines the strengths and limitations of the perspective and outlines directions for further research. Key words: child maltreatment; outcomes; population health perspective Introduction Since the 1990s, child maltreatment has increasingly been viewed as a major public health problem in Canada. This has occurred, in part, because mounting evidence highlights the relationship between child maltreatment and impairment in both emotional and physical health. This paper examines the usefulness of the population health perspective (PHP) as a framework for studying child maltreatment outcomes by critiquing the approach and by applying the PHP-adopted list of determinants of health to these outcomes. It also outlines future directions for research in examining health outcomes related to child maltreatment from a PHP. Population health perspective

TREATING AIDS WITH NUTRITION by Harold D. Foster PhD University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (Reprinted with permission of the author) WHAT REALLY CAUSES AIDS? www.hdfoster.com/WhatReallyCausesAIDS.pdf (Editor's note: I urge all Newsletter readers to download Dr. Foster's important (and free) book.) If HIV-1 causes AIDS by depressing body selenium, cysteine, glutamine and tryptophan then the way to treat this disorder is obviously diets enriched in these nutrients . But how much of each is required? What are the ideal levels of selenium, cysteine, glutamine, and tryptophan in the human body? AIDS AND SELENIUM A study by Shamberger and Willis discovered that healthy US individuals, between 50 and 71 years old, averaged 21.7 micrograms of selenium per 100 millilitres of blood. This compared with cancer patients of the same age range who were found to have only 16.2 micrograms per 100 millilitres. Furthermore, in a subsequent paper, the same authors described a comparison of selenium levels in the blood of people from 19 US cities. These were highest in Rapid City, South Dakota and lowest in Lima, Ohio; 25.6 and 15.7 micrograms per 100 millilitres respectively. Interestingly, Shamberger and Willis found a clear inverse relationship between cancer death rates in these cities and blood selenium levels. The higher the selenium, the lower the cancer mortality. To illustrate, in Rapid City, where blood selenium levels were highest, the annual cancer death rate per 100,000 people, during the period 1962 to 1966, was 94.0. In contrast, in Lima, Ohio the cancer mortality rate for this time period was exactly double this at 188.0. This strongly suggests that it is far better to have a blood selenium level of 25.6 micrograms per 100 millilitres than one of 15.7. Such US regional differences in blood selenium levels were almost certainly a reflection of variations in the local soil content of this mineral.

http://lymerick.ulmarweb.dk/selenium-Foster.htm
Foster HD AIDS and the "Selenium-CD4 T Cell Tailspin" The Geography of a Pandemic Abstract: AIDS involves slow but relentless declines in serum selenium and CD4 T-cells, both of which are independent predictors of mortality. This relationship between selenium and the immune system is one of positive feedback, in which a decline in either of these two variables causes further depression of the other. Termed the "selenium-CD4 T Cell Tailspin" by the author, this feedback loop plays a crucial role in both the diffusion of HIV-1 and the associated development of AIDS. Manipulating this tailspin opens new avenues for both prevention and treatment. Except from page 94-95: In 'Reducing Cancer Mortality: A Geographical Perspective', this author presented evidence to suggest that, after smoking and alcohol had been accounted for, global cancer mortality was determined largely by environmental levels of selenium, calcium, mercury and the application of road salt. Landscapes of longevity were thought to have elevated selenium and calcium and depressed mercury in their food chains. Senegal was shown to have such an ideal environment for cancer prevention. This West African country is essentially a dessicated Cretaceous and early Eocene Sea. Because of this, calcium phosphate, mined for use in fertilizers, is the country's principal mineral product. It is derived from selenium-enriched phosphorites.
