Biography of E.M. Forster (1879-1970)
E.M. Forster Edward Morgan Forster was born the first day of 1879 in London. His father, an architect from a strict evangelical family, died of consumption soon after Forster was born, thus Forster was raised by his mother and paternal great-aunt. Since his mother was from a more liberal and somewhat irresponsible background, Forster was raised in a household that exposed him to great domestic tension. Forster was raised at Rooksnest, the house that inspired Howards End. Forster was educated as a dayboy at the Tonbridge School, Kent, an experience responsible for a good deal of his later criticism of the English public school system. Forster attended college at King's College, Cambridge, which greatly broaded his intellectual interests and gave him his first exposure to Mediterranean culture, which counterbalanced the more rigid English culture in which he was raised. Forster became a writer shortly after graduating from King's College. His first novels were products of that particular time, stories about the changing social conditions at the decline of Victorianism. However, where these earlier works differed from Forster's contemporaries is their more colloquial style. These novels established an early conviction of Forster that men and women should keep in contact with the land to cultivate their imaginations. He developed this theme in his first novels, Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905) and The Longest Journey (1907). Forster followed these with A Room With a View (1908), a comic novel concerning the experience of a young British woman, Lucy Honeychurch, in Italy.

...the fundamental aspect of the novel is its story-telling aspect...
EM Forster , Aspects of the Novel I liked this collected series of lectures on what makes for good novel writing much better than almost any of the novels that Forster actually wrote ( A Passage to India [see Review ] being the lone exception). Forster treats seven different aspectsthe story, people, plot, fantasy, prophecy, pattern, and rhythmin a breezy conversational style. Along the way, he offers examples, both good and bad, from literary history. I found myself agreeing and dissenting about equally, but the whole thing was immensely interesting and entertaining. Here are some of the observations that I agreed with and why: A story "can only have one fault: that of making the audience not want to know what happens
next."

by Michelle Campagna Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was an English novelist, essayist, and social and literary critic. His novels were written in a fluid style, and they showed his interests in social and personal relationships, along with the psychological and racial problems in his time. He was best known for his novels Howards End and A Passage to India In 1901-02, Forster made his first visits to Italy and Greece and began writing short fiction and novels and devoting much of his life to writing. His first novel was Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), followed by The Longest Journey A Room With a View Howards End (1910), and later A Passage to India The Celestial Omnibus and Other Stories came out in 1911, and The Eternal Moment and Other Stories came out in 1928. Both of these novels were volumes of Forster's shorter works Forster returned from his many travels and to a break from writing to get his M. A. at Cambridge. After his short rest, he returned to the world of traveling. In 1912-13, he spent his winter in India, gaining information for his novel A Passage to India . During this time, Forster became a part of the Bloomsbury group, which included many of the intellectual and artistic individuals in London. After World War II broke out, Forster volunteered for the Red Cross. This sent him to Alexandria, where he was from 1915 to 1918. In 1922, he returned to India for six months and became the private secretary to the Maharajah of the State of Dewas Senior. Also during this year, Forster started to write nonfiction, beginning with a guidebook to Alexandria. After World War II, he traveled to South America, the United States, Italy, and Greece.
