BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Born in London on January 1, 1879 and educated at King's College, Cambridge, Forster won many awards and was given the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969. Foster died in Coventry, England on June 7, 1970. He inherited a serious and moral character from his paternal ancestors, the Thorntons. His maternal ancestors, the Wichelos, gave him an enjoyment of aesthetic responsiveness. His reputation was developed and strengthened during the Edwardian years. His greatest recognition came after WWII, when he had almost completely ceased writing fiction. His ability to create characters and situations of great human significance, his speculative power, and his qualities as a serious moralist with great ability as a perceptive realist in displaying the Edwardian and post war society are among the strengths of his writing style. Women figured strongly in his upbringing. His father had died when he was 1 1/2 years old. He was raised primarily by his mother. A time which was important to his early life was his residence at Rooksnest, in Hertfordshire. He developed a love for the English countryside, and Rooksnest became a model for Howards End While at Cambridge, he became a member of a group called the Cambridge Conversazione Society. This group discussed moral, intellectual, and aesthetic issues. Many of the members later formed a London group known as the

General Articles A substantial introduction to Forster. "Forster was principally an Edwardian novelist concerned with the restrictions placed on personal freedom by English sensibilities, but his later work, especially his last novel, A Passage to India (1924), can be called Modernist." EM. Forester Writer E.M Forster English author and critic.
Member of Bloomsbury group and friend of Virginia Woolf. After gaining fame as a novelist, Forster spent his 46 remaining years publishing mainly short stories and non-fiction. Of his five important novels four appeared before World War I. Forster's major concern was that individuals should 'connect the prose with the passion' within themselves, and that one of the most exacting aspect of the novel is prophecy. Forster was registered as Henry Morgan after his birth. Only by mistake was he christened Edward Morgan Forster. Edward Morgan Forster was born in London as the son of an architect, who died before his only child was two years old. Forster's childhood and much of his adult life was dominated by his mother and his aunts. The legacy of her paternal great-aunt Marianne Thornton, descendant of the Clapham Sect of evangelists and reformers, gave later Forster the freedom to travel and to write. Forster's years at Tonbridge School as a teenager were difficult - he suffered from the cruelty of his classmates. Link:

  • "There's nothing like a debate to teach one quickness. I often wish I had gone in for them when I was a youngster. It would have helped me no end."
    • Howard's End (1910) (ch. 15) Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer. Only connect, and the beast and the monk, robbed of the isolation that is life to either, will die.
      • Howard's End (1910) (ch. 22) "Pathos, piety, courage, — they exist, but are identical, and so is filth. Everything exists, nothing has value."
        • A Passage to India "As long as learning is connected with earning, as long as certain jobs can only be reached through exams, so long must we take the examination system seriously. If another ladder to employment was contrived, much so-called education would disappear, and no one would be a penny the stupider."
          • Aspects of the Novel "A mirror does not develop because an historical pageant passes in front of it. It only develops when it gets a fresh coat of quicksilver - in other words, when it acquires new sensitiveness; and the novel's success lies in its own sensitiveness, not in the success of its subject matter."

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies EDWIN MORGAN FORSTER (1879 - 1970) Forster's Uncle Willie was a huntin', fishin' and shootin' gentleman who lived at Acton House, near Felton in Northumberland. Forster spent part of the summer with him for several years around 1900. He wrote a letter from there on 27 July 1899: 'Yesterday I went to Bamborough (sic) saw the castle and tombs of my ancestors - I've no reason to suppose they are, though the name is the same and the arms similar, but Bamborough is such a nice cradle for one's race that I shall always call them mine. Then I paddled on the deserted beach and felt very Calibanish for I had nothing to dry my toes and the sand stuck them together.' Forster was certainly at his uncle's in April 1904 and writes from there again on 28 October 1905. He was again at Acton House in the summer of 1906, but that was his last visit; nor was Forster mentioned in his uncle's will. Relations with the unpredictable Uncle Willie broke down and Forster came no more. Acton house is an impressive two-storied ashlared building of about 1780, and Forster, by his own account, used it as a model for Cadover in his own favourite novel
