Forster, E. M. (1879-1970)
page: Although he always remained to some extent an Edwardian, E. M. Forster embodied more fully than any other imaginative writer of his generation a modern gay-liberation perspective. Born in London on New Year's Day 1879, the son of a promising architect who was to die within the infant's first year of life, Forster grew up cosseted by a host of female relatives. He became aware of his homosexuality in the climate of repression and self-consciousness that permeated English society in the aftermath of the Wilde scandal of 1895. Sponsor Message.
As a student at King's College, Cambridge, where he matriculated in 1897, he fell in love with a fellow undergraduate, with whom he enjoyed kisses and embraces but probably not genital sexuality. Forster, in fact, was not to experience a fully satisfying sexual relationship of any duration until he was nearly forty, when he fell in love with an Egyptian tram conductor in Alexandria in 1919. His sexual frustration undoubtedly influenced his art almost as much as his homosexuality itself, accounting for the emphasis in his early work on the need for sexual fulfillment and wholeness of being.

Forster, E. M. (1879-1970)
page: "The Other Boat" The longest of Forster's gay stories is "The Other Boat," which was completed in 1958, when Forster was almost eighty years old. The tale recounts the struggle to fuse into wholeness the divided personality of Lionel March, a young army captain. The struggle comes to a crisis in his relationship with a sensuous, classless, effeminate youth named Cocoa, "a subtle, supple boy who belonged to no race and always got what he wanted." Lionel's search for wholeness is complicated by his confused identity and made especially difficult by the conflict between his secret love for Cocoa and his self-definition as a member of a racist society. Sponsor Message.
The story's violent conclusion, in which Lionel murders Cocoa and then commits suicide, expresses the young officer's inability to face either a life led contrary to prevailing currents or one without tribal identity. Unlike Cocoa, he lacks the heroism to achieve wholeness. "The Other Boat" explores with profound insight the psychological effects of racism and homophobia. Forster as Essayist and Moral Presence In the final decades of his life, even as his reputation as a novelist grew with every novel that he did not write, Forster abandoned fiction and became a superb essayist, thoughtful critic and biographer, and a shrewd analyst of politics and culture. As a dogged defender of civil liberties, he protested the persecution of gay books and authors.

Biographical Sketch
Edward Morgan Forster was born January 1, 1879, in London. His father, also Edward Morgan, was an architect and died of consumption 18 months after the birth of his son, leaving him in the care of his mother, Alice Clara Whichelo and a variety of female relatives. Forster's mother moved with her young son to rural Hertfordshire in 1883 where he lived for most of his childhood before being sent to Kent House preparatory school in Eastbourne. In 1887 a great-aunt left a legacy to Forster which, when combined with his father's estate, paid for Forster's education and later allowed him the leisure to be a writer without needing to worry about income. Forster finished his school days at Tonbridge School, which he attended as a day student rather than as a boarder between 1893-1897. In the autumn of 1897, Forster entered King's College, Cambridge, where he found liberation from the conformist attitudes of preparatory school. He was elected to the Apostles in 1901, along with Desmond MacCarthy, and became acquainted with the well-known alumni of that society, G.E. Moore, Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf, and Roger Fry, among others, who later introduced him into the Bloomsbury group. It was at Cambridge that Forster began to think of himself as a writer and the years immediately following his graduation were his most productive as a novelist. Between 1903 and 1910 he produced

by Michelle Campagna Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was an English novelist, essayist, and social and literary critic. His novels were written in a fluid style, and they showed his interests in social and personal relationships, along with the psychological and racial problems in his time. He was best known for his novels Howards End and A Passage to India In 1901-02, Forster made his first visits to Italy and Greece and began writing short fiction and novels and devoting much of his life to writing. His first novel was Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), followed by The Longest Journey A Room With a View Howards End (1910), and later A Passage to India The Celestial Omnibus and Other Stories came out in 1911, and The Eternal Moment and Other Stories came out in 1928. Both of these novels were volumes of Forster's shorter works Forster returned from his many travels and to a break from writing to get his M. A. at Cambridge. After his short rest, he returned to the world of traveling. In 1912-13, he spent his winter in India, gaining information for his novel A Passage to India . During this time, Forster became a part of the Bloomsbury group, which included many of the intellectual and artistic individuals in London. After World War II broke out, Forster volunteered for the Red Cross. This sent him to Alexandria, where he was from 1915 to 1918. In 1922, he returned to India for six months and became the private secretary to the Maharajah of the State of Dewas Senior. Also during this year, Forster started to write nonfiction, beginning with a guidebook to Alexandria. After World War II, he traveled to South America, the United States, Italy, and Greece.

Administrative/Biographical History
E.M. Forster was born in 1879. His father, E.M.L. Forster, was an architect living in London, but died in the year following his son's birth. The boy was thus raised by his mother, Alice Clara Forster, and a number of female relatives, spending his early years at Rooksnest, a country house near Stevenage in Hertfordshire. It was a house for which E.M. Forster held great affection throughout his life, and became the model for the home in his novel Howards End After a number of unhappy years in public schools, Forster came up to King's in 1897 to read classics. During his freshman year, he joined the society known as the Apostles, which he remained a member of throughout his undergraduate career, and received a B.A. in 1900. His tutor, Nathaniel Wedd, was of some influence on the young Forster, encouraging him to become a writer and more generally being responsible, according to Forster, for 'such awakening as has befallen me'. Forster stayed on for a fourth year to read history, being tutored in this capacity by Oscar Browning, and at the same time came under the influence of Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson, who became a lifelong friend.

His first novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), appeared when Forster was 26 years old and displays remarkably mature style. This was followed by The Longest Journey (1907) and A Room with a View (1908). The construction of these three novels was a reaction to lengthy, formally plotted Victorian fiction. Somewhat autobiographical, they also sounded a theme prevalent in Forster's essays: the need to temper middle-class materialism with due consideration of things of the mind and imagination, in order to achieve harmony and understanding. This theme is treated more fully in Forster's masterpieces, Howards End (1910), with its message “Only connect,” and
