Search all of Gustave Flaubert Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880), French novelist of the realist period, is known best for his sensational Madame Bovary (1857), a classic tale of romance and retribution. It is a portrait of the young provincial Emma Bovary as fallen woman and her adulterous liaisons with Rodolphe Boulanger. (It was criticised then banned for a period after its first release). Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen, France on 12 December 1821, the fifth of six children in a family of doctors. His father, Achille-Cléophas Flaubert, was chief surgeon in Rouen. (He died in 1846). Flaubert's mother, Anne Justine Caroline (née Fleuriot), was the daughter of a physician, and was to become one of the most influential people in his life and works. (She died in 1872). In the 1830s Flaubert attended the Collége Royal de Rouen, writing for its newspaper, reading Shakespeare, travelling extensively and at the age of fourteen began in earnest his own writings, inspired by his unconsummated love affair at this time with the much older and married Elisa Schlésinger. After unsuccessfully studying law in Paris in the early 1840s, the perfectionist in Flaubert (one of his maxims being: "Be regular and orderly in your life like a bourgeois, so that you may be violent and original in your work.”) begins a brisk period of further

Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) said that in writing, everything is a matter of style, of the distinctive way one expresses oneself. Flaubert's life was remarkable mostly for the way he devoted himself to writing fiction. He once told a friend, "I have more imagination than heart." Born into a thrifty, prosperous family in Rouen, Flaubert was the son of a surgeon. His mother encouraged him to read literature and write plays while he was still a child. He attended school in Rouen and began to study law in Paris, but in 1844 he suffered the first of many attacks of unconsciousness - possibly epilepsy - so he gave up law and returned home to live with his widowed mother. Like many of his contemporaries, including the poet Charles Baudelaire and his relative Guy de Maupassant, Flaubert was afflicted with syphilis. In his Dictionary of Accepted Opinions

    Gustave Flaubert
The French novelist Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was born in Rouen, Normandy on 12 December 1821 as the son of a surgeon.
He studied law in Paris, but dedicated most of his time to literature. He did not complete his law training and returned to Rouen to dedicate himself on his literary career.
His fame and influence as a master of fiction are based on his best-known novel "Madame Bovary" (1856). This novel tells the story of an unfulfilled wife of a country doctor who pursues romantic fulfillment in a series of bold affairs. This novel was an immediate success and Flaubert enjoined a period of social success in Paris and at the court of Napoleon III.
Flaubert's intense attention to facts and description caused some to see him as a realist or naturalist, though Flaubert rejected such labels himself.
Other important works of Flaubert are "Salammbô" (1862) and "L'Education sentimentale" (1869). He is one of the most respected French authors of the nineteenth century.
Flaubert died on 8 May 1880 and was buried at Rouen.

    Did you know?
An eclectically playful man, at one point in his travels he developed an obsession with the camel ("I am quite worn out trying to imitate its cry"). Close friends, including Henry James, maintained that he never matured beyond 20, when he suffered a major epileptic episode. Critical verdict The unjudgmental, ultra-realistic portrayal of adultery in Madame Bovary was considered immoral: Flaubert, his publisher and printer were all prosecuted, though they escaped conviction. Unconcerned, Flaubert remarked that "I would not like to die before having emptied a few more buckets of shit on the heads of my fellow men." Henry James called him a "novelist's novelist," while Nabokov declared that "without Flaubert there would have been no Marcel Proust, no James Joyce...
