Introduction
The F. Scott Fitzgerald Papers (C0187) is a comprehensive literary archive containing the original manuscripts, working drafts, corrected galleys, personal and professional correspondence, autobiographical scrapbooks, photographs, and other original materials of F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), Princeton Class of 1917. The papers are Fitzgerald's own, remaining in his possession at the time of his death in 1940; they are not an artificial collection. Frances Scott ("Scottie") Fitzgerald Lanahan (later Smith), the daughter of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, donated the papers to the Princeton University Library in 1950. Concerning this donation, see Matthew J. Bruccoli, "Where They Belong: The Acquisition of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Papers," Princeton University Library Chronicle

Fitzgerald was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He went to Princeton University, but quit in 1917. In 1920, Fitzgerald published his first novel, This Side of Paradise . The novel deals with the post-World War I generation and their disillusioned lives. Later that year, Fitzgerald married Zelda Sayre, the quintessential 1920s flapper. Fitzgerald's writings grew in popularity, and his short stories especially were in high demand. These stories appeared in 4 books: Flappers and Philosophers Tales of the Jazz Age All the Sad Young Men (1926), and Taps at Reveille The Great Gatsby (1925), Fitzgerald's masterpiece, discusses the pursuit and disillusionment with the American Dream. Unfortunately, this novel sold poorly and Fitzgerald descended into alcoholism. Tender is the Night (1934) was an almost autobiographical novel about Fitzgerald's life with Zelda, and also sold poorly. The Last Tycoon (1941) remained unfinished at Fitzgerald's death.

General Articles An introduction to F. Scott Fitzgerald by Anne M Daniel, Princeton University, from the Literary Encyclopedia. "Of all the American Modernist writers with tragic lives, F. Scott Fitzgerald holds the franchise. A glittering success as a writer when he was just twenty-four, Fitzgerald died still a young man, at forty-four, most of his works out of print and his status as one of the finest and most popular American writers yet to be established." http://www.lrb.co.uk/v22/n18/lead01_.html "Daisy packs her bags," by Zachary Leader, a discussion of Trimalchio: An Early Version of 'The Great Gatsby' by F. • A Bio-bibliographical note about F. Scott Fitzgerald
"F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) is best known for his novels and short stories which chronicle the excesses of America's 'Jazz Age' during the 1920s. "Born into a fairly well-to-do family in St Paul, Minnesota in 1896 Fitzgerald attended, but never graduated from Princeton University. Here he mingled with the monied classes from the Eastern Seaboard who so obsessed him for the rest of his life. In 1917 he was drafted into the army, but he never saw active service abroad. Instead, he spent much of his time writing and re-writing his first novel This Side of Paradise , which on its publication in 1920 became an instant success. In the same year he married the beautiful Zelda Sayre and together they embarked on a rich life of endless parties. "Dividing their time between America and fashionable resorts in Europe, the Fitzgeralds became as famous for their lifestyle as for the novels he wrote. Fitzgerald once said 'Sometimes I don't know whether Zelda and I are real or whether we are characters in one of my novels'. He followed his first success with

Scott Fitzgerald Remarkably, when his life ended with a heart attack at 44, writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) "died thinking he was an absolute failure ," explained writer Irwin Shaw. "Today he is one of the icons of American fiction." The New York Times eulogized that Fitzgerald "epitomized all the sad young men of the post-war generation." Fitzgerald said, "An author ought to write for the youth of his generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward." Translated into 35 languages , his works sell about 500,000 copies yearly. "Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy," observed Fitzgerald, born on this day in St Paul, Minnesota. His classics The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender is the Night (1934) chronicled the Jazz Age and are considered the finest in American literature. Believing that, "All good writing is swimming under water and holding your breath ," his career soared like a meteor with the publication of his first novel, This Side of Paradise (1921). That

Biography Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 to December 21, 1940) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and was the second cousin of the author of the National Anthem. His father, Edward, was from Maryland. Fitzgerald's mother, Mary McQuillan, was the daughter of an Irish immigrant. Both parents were Catholics. Fitzgerald's first writing appeared in the school newspaper while attending St. Paul Academy when he was thirteen. Through the ages of fifteen to seventeen, he attended a Catholic prep school in New Jersey called the Newman School. There, he met Father Sigourney Fay. Fitzgerald neglected most of his studies because of his literary apprenticeship. Along with writing the lyrics for the Princeton Triangle Club musicals, he also wrote for Princeton Tiger humor magazine and the Nassau Literary Magazine Since he was an unlikely graduate because of his grades, Fitzgerald joined the army in 1917 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry. Convinced that he was going to die he quickly wrote a novel entitled, "The Romantic Egotist".

Novelist of manners F. Scott Fitzgerald and social satirist Sinclair Lewis were the writers of the 1920s generation who came closest to being Edith Wharton's literary heirs. Fitzgerald and Wharton first met at Scribner's in New York, and in 1923 Fitzgerald wrote the dialogue for the film version of Wharton's The Glimpses of the Moon . When The Great Gatsby came out in 1925, he sent her an inscribed copy, to which she replied with an appreciative letter that showed she had read his works with care and understanding. In the postscript she invited him to tea at Saint-Brice. Having stopped along the way to fortify himself, Fitzgerald was not entirely sober when he arrived, and to cover his social insecurity, he resorted to bravado, announcing that he and his wife had spent a night in a Paris bordello. In her best grande-dame manner, Mrs. Wharton coolly responded, "Yes, and then what?" In her diary for that day, her only comment on the visit was "(awful)." F. Scott Fitzgerald 1896-1940

When Hemingway first met F. Scott Fitzgerald in Paris in the spring of 1925, Fitzgerald had just published The Great Gatsby , and was at the height of his reputation as one of America's leading young writers. Even before they began to talk, Fitzgerald was prepared to like Hemingway, for he had seen in our time and admired it greatly. On the strength of that volume, he had, in fact, recommended its author "as the real thing" to his own editor, Max Perkins, at Charles Scribner's Sons, and thanks partly to his urging, the prestigious Scribner's finally took Hemingway on as one of its writers in 1926.
