When he was able to do professional lecturing, he gradually grew both popular and wealthy (though he never learned to live within his means). His theme of American Manifest Destiny promised a millennium of peace and prosperity.

- Erwin Gudde, California Place Names "FISKE, John (1842-1901), American philosopher and historian, whose writings on philosophy were responsible for spreading in the U.S. the ideas of the British social philosopher Herbert Spencer and the originator of the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin . Originally named Edmund Fisk Green, he was born in Hartford, Conn., and educated at Harvard University. In 1864 he was admitted to the bar, but soon gave up his legal pursuits and began writing for periodicals. In 1869 he gave a series of lectures on positivism at Harvard and the following year he was appointed history tutor at the university. Two years afterward he became assistant librarian, a post he held until 1879. In 1881 he was named to a lectureship at Washington University, Saint Louis, Mo., becoming nonresident professor of American history in 1884. Fiske claimed as his contribution to the doctrine of evolution his detection of the part played by the longer period of infancy in human beings than in animals. His works include Darwinism and Other Essays (1879), Excursions of an Evolutionist (1884), The Destiny of Man Viewed in the Light of His Origin (1884), and The Idea of God as Affected by Modern Knowledge (1885).

Preface
Chapters: Notes III. WEREWOLVES AND SWAN-MAIDENS. [64] Compare Plato, Republic, VIII. 15. These and other similar mythical germs were developed by the mediaeval imagination into the horrible superstition of werewolves. A werewolf, or loup-garou[65] was a person who had the power of transforming himself into a wolf, being endowed, while in the lupine state, with the intelligence of a man, the ferocity of a wolf, and the irresistible strength of a demon. The ancients believed in the existence of such persons; but in the Middle Ages the metamorphosis was supposed to be a phenomenon of daily occurrence, and even at the present day, in secluded portions of Europe, the superstition is still cherished by peasants. The belief, moreover, is supported by a vast amount of evidence, which can neither be argued nor pooh-poohed into insignificance. It is the business of the comparative mythologist to trace the pedigree of the ideas from which such a conception may have sprung; while to the critical historian belongs the task of ascertaining and classifying the actual facts which this particular conception was used to interpret.

Preface
Chapters: Notes V. MYTHS OF THE BARBARIC WORLD. THE theory of mythology set forth in the four preceding papers, and illustrated by the examination of numerous myths relating to the lightning, the storm-wind, the clouds, and the sunlight, was originally framed with reference solely to the mythic and legendary lore of the Aryan world. The phonetic identity of the names of many Western gods and heroes with the names of those Vedic divinities which are obviously the personifications of natural phenomena, suggested the theory which philosophical considerations had already foreshadowed in the works of Hume and Comte, and which the exhaustive analysis of Greek, Hindu, Keltic, and Teutonic legends has amply confirmed. Let us now, before proceeding to the consideration of barbaric folk-lore, briefly recapitulate the results obtained by modern scholarship working strictly within the limits of the Aryan domain.
