Editorial Two great losses to chemistry This summer has seen the deaths of two distinguished chemists. On 29th July Dorothy Hodgkin died at the age of 83 in England after a long and distinguished career in chemical crystallography. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1964 for her work in elucidating the structure of vitamin B12. Dorothy Hodgkin was a pioneer in applying X-ray techniques to solving the structures of large molecules, which took years and years of painstaking work. Then on the 19th August Linus Pauling, winner of two Nobel Prizes - for Chemistry and for Peace - died in California at the age of 93. Linus Pauling ahs been described as one of the twenty greatest scientists of all time for his many contributions to the understanding of chemical bonding and structure. He dominated Chemistry for many years and James Watson and Francis Crick were afraid, as you may recall from The Double Helix, that Pauling would beat them to the structure of DNA. Since he 'retired' he has devoted his energies to more controversial subjects with his theories on the role of vitamin C in combatting the common cold and cancer. He recently featured in the BBC2 series Heretics for his heterodox views on cancer. He died of cancer despite his diet, but he may owe his longevity to the high does of vitamin C that he took - it just took longer for cancer to catch up with him. He was always a man who wasn't afraid to champion unorthodox views and for years he was persona non grata with the US authorities for his opposition to nuclear weapons. Pauling was right so often that I suspect that some of his views on vitamin C will yet turn out to be correct. He shared with Dorothy Hodgkin a concern for peace and was opposed to the misuse of science in warfare, and both of them made distinguished contributions both to Chemistry but also to the wider understanding of science and its social impact. Their deaths are two great losses to Chemistry and humanity.

    * mention in the "Meteorologica" (c. 340 or 350 BC) at 373 b in Book III
    * (p.253 of the Loeb Library edition):
    * "Distant and dense air does of course normally act as a mirror . . . ,

    * to be elevated above it and everything appears abnormally large;. . . "

    Smyth Family History
    By David Smyth
Version 8: December 3, 2004 NOTE: This updated version now includes: New information at Generation 3, on the sons of Thomas Smyth and Margaret Lightfoot, and the origin of the Smyth coats of arms New information on Generations 10 and 11, Thomas Hutchinson Smyth, who died in 1830, and his offspring Arthur M.D. and Edward, the banker. New information in Appendix 4, on the ancestry of William Smithdike Appendix 6, the Australian descendants of Arthur Smyth Introduction This is the history of our small branch of the Smyth family, as far as I have been able to piece it together from various sources. It traces my Smyth ancestors back through my grandfather Thomas Hutchinson Smyth (1851-1931) to his forebears in Ireland and northern England. It covers twelve generations to my grandfather (fourteen to me, sixteen to the youngest Smyth generation now living), and a period of about five hundred years. This is as far back as I have been able to track the Smyth line so far. However, it is a work in progress, and further information will be added as more facts come to light. The current version, dated December 3, 2004, will, I hope, be superseded by later editions as my research continues. In the early 1600s, one ancestor, Ralph Smyth, married Elizabeth Hawksworth of Hawksworth Hall, Yorkshire. The Hawksworth family can be traced back for at least another four hundred years, through seventeen generations, to a Robert de Hawksworth who lived in Yorkshire in the early Thirteenth century. (See the Hawksworth appendix).
