In earlier sources and in some later ones, the grail is something very different. The term "grail" comes from the Latin gradale Parzival Perceval Morte d'Arthur ) do achieve the quest. Tennyson is perhaps the author who has the greatest influence on the conception of the Grail quest for the modern English-speaking world through his Idylls and his short poem "Sir Galahad" . However, James Russell Lowell's "The Vision of Sir Launfal" , one of the most popular of nineteenth-century American poems gave to generations a democratized notion of the Grail quest as something achievable by anyone who is truly charitable. The notion that the Grail story originated in fertility myths was popularized by Jessie Weston in her book From Ritual to Romance , which was used by T. S. Eliot in the writing of

    Poetry
From the earliest lullabies and nursery rhymes, children have been charmed by poetry. It soothes the crying baby and helps the schoolchild learn. Even the somber morality tales of the eighteenth century are made more palatable through verse. The Butterflys' Ball . New York: McLoughlin Bros., circa 1860. Written by William Roscoe, a historian and Member of Parliament, and originally published in 1807, The Butterflys' Ball has often been credited with ushering in a new era in children's books, one in which light-hearted, non-didactic, non-moralistic tales would finally be readily available. A story in verse, it describes a party attended by butterfiles, beetles, snails, and moles. The popularity of this cheerful fantasy made possible such later classics as Alice in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows. Charles Lamb, 1775-1834.
The King and Queen of Hearts: With the Rogueries of the Knave who Stole the Queen's Pies: illustrated in fifteen elegant engravings . London: Printed for M.J. Godwin, 1809.

REH to Charles D. Hornig, 1 November 1933: "Thanks for the copy of The Fantasy Fan. I found it very interesting, and think it has a good future. Anybody ought to be willing to pay a dollar for the privilege of reading, for a whole year, the works of Lovecraft, Smith, and Derleth. I am glad to see that you announce a poem by Smith in the next issue. He is a poet second to none. I also hope you can persuade Lovecraft to let you use some of his superb verse. Weird poetry possesses an appeal peculiar to itself and the careful use of it raises the quality of any magazine. ¶ I liked very much the department of 'True Ghost Stories' and hope you will continue it. The world is full of unexplained incidents and peculiar circumstances, the logical reasons of which are often so obscure and hidden that they are lent the illusion of the supernatural. ¶ Enclosed find my check for a year's subscription. I shall be glad to submit some things, if you wish."
