Taking everything together then, I declare that our city is the School of Greece [ ], and I declare that in my opinion each single one of our citizens, in all the manifold aspects of life, is able to show himself the rightful lord and owner of his own person, and do this, moreover, with exceptional grace and exceptional versatility. And to show that this is no empty boasting for the present occasion, but real tangible fact, you have only to consider the power which our city possesses and which has been won by those very qualities which I have mentioned. Athens, alone of the states we know, comes to her testing time in a greatness that surpasses what was imagined of her. The speech of Pericles, The Peloponnesian War , by Thucydides [Book Two, XLI:1, translated by Rex Warner, Penguin Books, 1954, 1964, p.119] The history of the United States may conveniently be divided into three parts, the " Old Republic ," 1789-1861, the " Middle Republic ," 1861-1933, and the " New Republic ," 1933-2005. The length of the "New Republic" is suggested by the previous ones: 72 years, or 18 presidential elections. It remains to be seen whether 2005, the prospective beginning of the "

(Biographical Sketches, Under Construction)
Geographically speaking Rutherford County occupies the exact center of the State, and almost the exact center of Middle Tennessee. Few if any vertical sections of any great depth have been made, and it is believed no record has been kept. The county embraces an area of over 500 square miles, the outcrop being blue limestone and shales. It is what geologists term lower Silurian. It is probable that the depth of this formation extends from 500 to 1,000 feet with occasional thin strata of other formations.
Black Fox Camp Spring was a marked place during the Indian troubles. There is a beautiful tradition of the celebrated Black Fox, who, when he was overpowered by his enemies, rather than fall into their hands, leaped into the spring with his arms and sank from sight. The story would have been incomplete had he not come to light again, and the tradition that buried him brought him out alive at Murfree Spring. About three miles from Murfreesboro is the old Bradley race track, which was a famous resort for sportsmen since 1820. Col. Robert Smith was a prominent figure in those races. Betting, card playing, and the usual accompaniment were common at those races. Near this old race track is the old Indian dance ground, which is a circular track dug out of the earth and rock. Neither history nor tradition tells of its origin.

WHEN the Thirty-second and Fifteenth Regiments left Mansfield, quiet from camp life resulted. Companies were still being enlisted, but they were those credited to other counties, whose recruiting officers came to Mansfield and its vicinity for men to fill their ranks. The county furnished a good many men in this way ; more than were really credited to it. The Government was needing still more men. The war was assuming its real proportions, and the North was rising to meet the conflict. One of the best men in the halls of Congress at that time was John Sherman. now the honored Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, and brother to the veteran who led an army through the heart of the enemy's country. Mr. Sherman had been active in the discharge of his duties during all the opening years of the war, and had gone as far as his station would permit. He was needed in the legislative halls and there he remained, doing, meanwhile, all he could to aid the volunteers.

Second Series Third Series In 1879, one of the first initiatives of the newly formed Manitoba Historical and Scientific Society was support for public lectures on a range of topics. These lectures were later published as the Transactions of the Manitoba Historical and Scientific Society , or Transactions for short. Seventy-two Transactions had been published by 1909, when the Society entered a period of inactivity. These are referred to as the First Series . This was followed by the Second Series (sometimes called the New Series) published between the World Wars, from 1926 to 1936. Finally, the Third Series was published starting in 1944. It was joined in 1956 by the Society's magazine Manitoba Pageant . Both were succeeded in 1980 by the journal Manitoba History A collection of Transactions was re-published in 2002 . Some of the other Transactions have been transcribed and are available for viewing here.
