April 12, 2002: 3:57 PM EDT By Sarah Max, CNN/Money Staff Writer NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Since Bank of America began marketing its BankAmericard in the 1950s, the credit card has become as much a part of American culture as fast food and football. We use plastic to pay for everything from cappuccinos to taxes. And we sleep better at night thinking that even if we have little in the bank, we can always count on our high credit limits to cushion any economic bumps in the road. But here's a wake-up call: For many consumers, the price of credit is steep and growing. While issuers are quick to tease us with introductory rates and reward us for our loyalty, they are also quick to punish anyone who doesn't play by their rules. Fees, they're everywhere you want to be

WHAT IS A BUYING CLUB?
A commercial buying club offers discounts on merchandise and or services to its members; however, the membership fee is often high - sometimes as much as $500 or more. If the member receives a 25% discount on merchandise, in order to recoup the $500 membership fee, a member would need to buy $2,000 worth of merchandise. The "savings" may apply to "suggested retail price," an amount much higher than the normal selling price. A discount store could offer the item at the same price as the buying club and not charge a membership fee.

Listed Company Audit Committees
Dear Mr. Katz: I am writing to provide my comments on the above-referenced proposed rule, and respond specifically to two sets of questions posed: Is the proposed exemption for independent board members that sit on both a parent's and consolidated majority-owned subsidiary's board of directors appropriate? Is the requirement that the board member also is otherwise independent of the subsidiary necessary? Should the exemption be limited only to wholly-owned subsidiaries or other specified level of ownership? Should the exemption be denied if the subsidiary maintains a listing for its own securities? Is there any need for a similar exemption from the "interested person" test for investment companies? I agree with the proposed exemption for independent board members that sit on both a parent's and consolidated majority-owned subsidiary's board of directors. As the staff noted in the proposal, entities with a holding company structure operate through subsidiaries, and there will often be an overlap among the members of the board of directors of both the parent and the subsidiary. At times, an issuer parent may itself be a controlled entity, and there may be overlap among the members of the board of both the issuer parent and its parent (which may itself be another issuer, or it may be privately held). In all such cases, there are valid business reasons for the overlap among the various board of directors, since the knowledge and experience gained by an individual sitting on the subsidiary's board, and any relevant expertise such individual may have, would be useful in their capacity as a member of both boards of directors.

I've been doing architectural design for local owners and contractors for a while. Usually less than 2000 sq. ft. I have a job doing the architectural and structural for a 5500 sq.ft. residence (probably more about it later). Question for those doing multi-million dollar residences, what is the difference between your fee and the standard commercial rate for architectural and structural services? Thanks, Greg

Kellogg Search Let them pay fees; With tax increases unpalatable, politicians are finding a new way to feed starved budgets
By: Greg Hinz November 17, 2003 Crain's Chicago Business Government in Illinois is raising fees, not taxes, to close budget gaps. And aside from the obvious hypocrisy of that policy-the ''no new taxes'' pledge has become a familiar refrain on the campaign trail and during every budget season-is that such a bad thing?
New and increased consumer fees and fines, business user charges, intrafund handling fees and similar devices make up a growing proportion of the city, state and county's budgets. Chicago alone has seen fee-based and related non-tax revenues rise 110% since 1993, to make up nearly 30% of the city's proposed 2004 operating budget of $2.58 billion. Put another way, half the increase in the operating budget since '93 has come from fees and other non-tax items.
Mayor Richard M. Daley's 2004 budget holds the line on property taxes, but would require motorists to feed parking meters on Sundays and in the evening, boost water and sewer fees 3% and raise fees for building and other license inspections 10%.
