Father Ryan High School - My Recollections
by Thor F Carden
I wrote the following in 1999. As I recalled the events I have recorded I was struck by how self centered and cruel we all were. I am impressed with how our teachers managed to continue to love us and teach us in spite of all the meanness we got into. I lot of the things I report here as if they were funny because they were to me at the time, the 1960's. Now I am ashamed. However, that is the way we were. I attended Father Ryan for all four years of high school from Fall, 1964 until Spring, 1968. It was still an all boys school back then. We had to wear ties. My freshman year they tried an experiment by having the seniors wear a blazer with Ryan's symbol on the front coat pocket. Evidently they liked it because everyone was required to wear them from then on. They were helpful when you were hitchhiking. Catholics would recognize us as Ryan students and pick us up. I was not a Catholic but I did not tell them that. My parents just did not want to send me to government schools and did not have time to home school me. My freshman year they placed me in Honors class. They divided each grade into 5 levels based on their grades the previous year. There was Honors, A, B, C, and D. Honors, where they placed me, was the highest. Our first day in Religion class Father Gill got mixed up and thought we were the "A" class. He started trying to make us feel better about being in level A by making out the Honors class was a bunch of snobby know-it-alls. I'm not sure if anyone ever corrected him. Then when he was calling roll he pronounced Snooky Roper's name as Sneaky Raper. I don't think he ever got control of the class again. He was gone the next year.

On Dec. 4, 1982, a deeply suntanned man, When police came to investigate, they found that the man had no identification. A note in his pocket said only that the $1,900 he carried should be used for his burial, with any remainder donated to the church. The note was signed with what turned out to be a false name. To this day, no one has been able to identify the man, nor to determine why he had come to the church to absolve himself of his sins. On the answers to that mystery may hang the fate of a small, quiet, meticulous man who now lives in South Austin, and who spent 20 years in a Texas prison for a murder he says he did not commit, but which investigators believe may be connected to the dead man at the Boise Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Dallas Morning News , Howard Swindle, who spent years looking for Ryan's real killer.

Father Ryan St. Anne Responds to critics by Norm Winick The Rev. Ryan St. Anne and his Monastery, The Holy Rosary Abbey, in the former Cottonwood Nursing home at 820 E. Fifth St., have been dogged by controversy long before relocating here several weeks ago. Local Catholic congregations have been warned by their priests that he’s not one of them and to avoid him. Paul Zipfel, the Bishop of Bismarck, N.D., says he’s not a "validly ordained Catholic priest" and the "Holy Rosary Abbey is not an institution of the Roman Catholic church." Authors of dozens of web pages accuse him of everything from being a con-man to a person of interest in the murder of a priest. A reporter in North Dakota has written that a woman in California suspects he’s holding her mother against her will. St. Anne, a self-described traditional Catholic, talked with me for nearly two hours and addressed all the animosity directed his way. "I represent, as far as the Catholic church goes, everything Vatican II threw out. I happen to be very much a proponent of traditional faith." In that regard, St. Anne and his followers still conduct a Latin Mass and adhere to the same pre-Vatican II tenets as Mel Gibson. "As a Benedictine Monastery, we are not subject to the ordinary [the rule of the Bishops]. Neither are any of the other Benedictine orders. The diocese does not own our church. They say we are in schism. Who is in schism? The ones who changed the rules after 1,500 years or the ones practicing for 40 years? They are the

Dear Father Ryan I noticed that sometimes at Mass, instead of sitting on the large chair in the middle of the sanctuary, you sit in one of the front pews for the Liturgy of the Word. Why do you find it necessary to do that and is it in keeping with the rubrics. BT
Dear BT: I think the rubrics indicate that the formal, appropriate place for the celebrant or presider, is a chair or bench placed prominently in the sanctuary, visible to the congregation and within appropriate range of the ambo (pulpit) and altar.
The rubrics also state that the presider is also a member of the congregational-community, and even in his position as spiritual leader of the worshipping body, has the same need to hear the Word proclaimed, and is called to the same challenge as the community to respond to that proclamation.
So at times, I join the congregation by sitting in one of the pews during the readings of the Word and the sung response and the Alleluia. In addition to helping me feel my solidarity with you in worship and prayer, there are times whereby sitting among you is a very helpful spiritual focus. Like you, I often need to position myself in a manner which really helps me concentrate on whatever it is God is saying to me or to us.

August 22nd, 2005 This isn’t my typical academic or profound post – more of a thinking out loud really. Ok, second, “MSM”. MainStream Media – yeah, well who doesn’t detest this crowd nowadays. Read this: http://insightscoop.typepad.com/2004/2005/08/msm_benedict_xv.html It makes me so sad that people are so sold out to having ANYTHING handed to them as truth that we’re not equipped to read even between these pathetically scant lines. Anyway, just watch the crowds on the EWTN replays and see how much the youth love the Church… not the pope – the CHURCH. The pope is the visible sign of unity – he’s not the Church and as much of a personality as JPtG (John Paul the Great) was, he remained the face of the CHURCH – not of the cult of personality. Ben16 is much the same way. His personality is not that of a demagogue – he is the face of the CHURCH and thanks be to God that we have a source of unity not in a doctrine but in a Man – Jesus Christ and the man his vicar, the pope! Glory!

Gay Catholics Outraged with Suspension of Priest
Dignity Canada Dignité is astonished and outraged with the suspension of Father Tim Ryan from his pastoral duties by the Archdiocese of Toronto, following his affidavit in favour of equal marriage. This draconian action is a reminder to Canadian Catholics that our leadership continues to meddle in secular affairs that affect all Canadians, not just Catholics. We gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered Catholics join with other concerned Catholics and all Canadians who seek justice and equality for all, in condemning this public humiliation of Father Ryan, one of a very few brave Catholic priests to speak out against the homophobia of our church. For us, Father Ryan is a hero of our time and he has our applause and support.

Father Ryan: an umpire in football heaven
PETER FLETCHER
June 9, 2003
When Catholic priest Denis Ryan isn't guiding the spiritual health of parishioners in Coleraine and Casterton, he can be found providing on-field direction to footballers across the Western District.
Father Ryan takes charge of football matches in the Western Border and Mininera leagues as a central whistleblower with the Western District Football Umpires Association.
On Saturday afternoon he shared officiating duties in the MDFL match of the round between Penshurst and Wickliffe-Lake Bolac with Dale Collins and Gary Hamilton, before preparing for a church service at Coleraine.
The subject of his sermon: national football hero Jason McCartney.
It created a busy weekend for Fr Ryan, who also conducted a service yesterday in Casterton.
After the match at Penshurst, the 57-year-old umpire revealed he had always held a strong religious and sporting faith. He worked as an assistant stationmaster with the railways before being ordained as a priest 17 years ago and played suburban football in Melbourne and Geraldton before joining the ranks of football umpires four or five years ago. Fr Ryan said although there was a lengthy break between playing and umpiring football, his return to the sport had been enjoyable.

The bizarre case of Rev. Ryan St. Anne Scott
Matt C. Abbott
Matt C. Abbott August 18, 2004 During his tenure in the Diocese of La Crosse, Wis., then-Bishop Raymond Burke — currently the noted Archbishop of St. Louis — had a particularly interesting cross to bear, one might say. That cross was one Ryan Patrick Scott. Father Ryan Patrick Scott, that is. Or, as he is currently known, Father Ryan St. Anne, O.S.B. You see, Scott is an independent Catholic priest. In Church-speak, he is schismatic, that is, not in communion with Rome. And whether he is/was validly ordained is, well.debatable. (According to sedevacantist priest Fr. Anthony Cekada, Scott "claims he was ordained a priest by an Old Catholic and then conditionally ordained by the retired Bishop of Peoria who.was then suffering from Alzheimer's disease.") At the USCCB's November 2002 meeting, during the height of the clergy sex-abuse scandal, Father St. Anne gave a presentation at a press conference held by 'The Linkup' organization for survivors of clergy abuse. The following are excerpts:

[October 29, 1963] He was born Ignatius Ryan on December 28, 1899 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Edward Ryan and Elizabeth Gavin. He was educated at St. Francis Church. In 1913 he went to the Passionist Preparatory Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1916 he entered the Pittsburgh novitiate and professed his vows on August 13, 1917. Prior to ordination, his class studied in Brighton, Massachusetts, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and West Hoboken, New Jersey. He was ordained by Bishop Paul Nussbaum, C.P. on June 24, 1924. He was part of the largest class, at that time, in the history of the province. Of the twenty-seven, eight members of his class were sent to China as missionaries. After Sacred Eloquence he was appointed Director of Students for a short time and then was made Director of the Retreat House in Jamaica, New York before the monastery was built. In 1927 he was named Lector of History and English and taught these subjects until 1933. In the fall of 1933 Father Ryan entered The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. to work on an M.A. in history under the direction of Father Peter Guilday, Ph.D. of the Department of History.
