Teachers' Guide Annie John
by Jamaica Kincaid About the book Note to Teachers
Annie John
is a haunting and provocative story of a young girl growing up on the island of Antigua thirty years ago. A classic coming-of-age story in the tradition of The Catcher in the Rye and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man , Jamaica Kincaid's novel focuses on a universal, tragic, and often comic theme: the loss of childhood. Annie's voice urgent, demanding to be heard is one that will not soon be forgotten by young readers. About the author
Jamaica Kincaid was born in Antigua, WI. For many years a staff writer at The New Yorker, she currently teaches literature and writing at Harvard. Preparing Students to Read Annie John
The questions, discussion topics, assignments, and suggested reading list that follow will enrich your students' understanding of the many rich themes of Jamaica Kincaid's Annie John . They are also designed to help place the novel within its historical context and within a literary tradition of coming-of-age novels. Encourage your students to read other accounts of growing up and leaving home. What do Kincaid's book, her heroine, and her point of view have in common with those of other such novels? In what way is her account unique? You should also encourage your students to write about their own experiences: their parents, their schools, their friends, the culture they live in, and that culture's tacit assumptions. In what way does growing up in 1950s and 1960s Antigua resemble their own experiences? In what way is it markedly different?

by Jimmy Hodges S
inger/songwriter Steve Earle has always been a rebel. Earle is often compared to fellow rockabilly-hillbilly singers such as Johnny Cash or Dwight Yoakam. Although Earle has yet to achieve the sheer massmarket success of either Cash or Yoakam, he, like both, followed a long and winding path to the top. And much like Cash, Earle has been to the peak of the mountain and to the depths of the ghetto. His soulful sound is lent credit by personal life experiences Earle has incorporated into his music. Stephen Fain Earle was born January 17, 1955, in Fort Monroe, Virginia. Legend has it that Earle's grandfather sent a container of Texas dirt to be placed beneath the delivery room table so that the first ground Steve touched would be Texan. Earle's father was an air-traffic controller in Virginia, but the family moved back to Texas soon after Steve was born. He grew up in Schertz, Texas the eldest of five children. He received his first guitar at age 11 and placed third with it in a local talent show by age 13. At the age of 14 Earle left home to live with his uncle Nick Fain in Houston. Fain would encourage Earle's aspirations of being a musician. Soon after, Earle met the recently-deceased Townes Van Zandt, a guitar player and singer/songwriter who would inspire him to make music his career. In 1974, at the tender age of 19, Steve left Houston for Nashville and a career in music (Kempler).
