After graduation, John turned to publishing and literary criticism, editing George H. Doran Company's The Bookman . He beacame a publisher and was the founding partner of Farrar and Rinehart, and later of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He was a poet of some note and wrote a number of books.

Farrar LLD (London), PhD (Bristol) Professor of Law John Farrar came to Bond University in 1993 as Dean of the Faculty of Law. Previously he had been Dean of the Canterbury Law School (NZ). He served as Dean until August 1996 and was Acting Vice Chancellor from July 1995 to August 1996. He has been a Professor of Law in the United Kingdom and New Zealand as well as Australia and has practised law in all three jurisdictions. His numerous publications include Farrar's Company Law, an English company law work now in its fourth edition, and a recently completed work on corporate governance. He has acted as consultant to the New Zealand Department of Justice, Treasury and Law Commission, the Business Council of Australia, Australian Institute of Company Directors and Australian Investment Managers' Group. He is a Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne. In 1994 he was a member of the four person panel of experts advising the Federal Attorney General on differential voting rights on ordinary shares. He has been a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, Visiting Scholar at New York University and Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto and the University of Hong Kong.
