A river-tested veteran, John Farrar has served as a licenced guide on the rivers of Washington State for the past twenty years. Though he has angled from Alaska to Argentina, on waters salt and fresh, he's always drawn home to the Pacific Northwest where he flyfishes for sea-run steelhead and resident trout. "I never tire of wading rivers," says John. "Being there is reward enough." Coming from the Black Hills of South Dakota to study at the University of Washington, John soon discovered the Northwest's great rivers and its fishery. He worked part-time in flyshops to support his need to fish and be near water. It wasn't long before patrons at the tackle counter asked John to be their guide. He reads water and finds fish the better to share both with his clients. As a casting instructor equally proficient with the single and double-handed rod, he helps you place your hopper tight to the Yakima's bank, or fling your spey fly far and fine across the Skagit's flow. From tying a fly that fishes well to faultlessly oaring through a challenging rapids John qualifies as a professional flyfishing guide. "I'll get you there," he says, "see that you enjoy yourself, and promise your return."

The Production of XANADU
The Concept
Producer Lawrence Gordon describes the history of Xanadu : 'Joel Silver was an executive for me with the assignment of developing projects. He happens to be a real film buff, and he wanted to make an old-fashioned musical. We developed the story for Warner Brothers, who declined to go ahead. Maybe they were right to do so. A musical fantasy is chancy, and at that time we didn't have Olivia or Gene. Joel and I still believed in the project. We took it to Universal and they decided to do the film.' Next came director Rober Greenwald. Gordon, having seen several movies for TV directed by Greenwald, admired his work. Although XANADU marks Greenwald's feature film debut, he has a very successful career with the stage as well as television.

Olivia Newton-John - Biography Richard Olivia in 1966 O livia Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England on September 26th 1948; her family moved to Australia when she was 5. Her mother was German, daughter of the physicist Max Born, her father was Welsh, a professor of German at Cambridge and Melbourne. Despite the academic background, early on Olivia showed an interest in singing, forming a band called the Sol Four with some schoolfriends, and later on singing at her brother in law's coffee bar in Australia. She also starred in a movie "Funny Things Happen Down Under" which was forgettable apart from some early promise shown in Olivia's delightful rendition of "Christmas Down Under". A talent contest hosted by the Australian Johnny O'Keefe offered Olivia the prize of a trip to England, and she took this up in 1965. Her first introduction to making records was a one-off single deal with Decca Records. The single, Till You Say You'll Be Mine/For Ever, is extremely rare though these two songs were available (Oct 1994) on the British compilation CD Pop Inside the 60's. E ngland did not make Olivia entirely happy - she missed Australia and her then boyfriend, Ian Turpie. In one interview she reports how she attempted to book her return flight without telling her mother, who had accompanied her to the UK. Fortunately for Olivia's fans and her future career her mother was not having her daughter waste this opportunity to broaden her horizons and Olivia's plans were thwarted.

DONOR INFORMATION
The John C. Farrar Diaries were loaned for microfilming to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia, by Alice Henson, on 27 July 1990 (Accession No. 4968).
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
On 28 March 1852, John C. Farrar left Perryville for the California gold fields. His journey overland began with a wagon train on the Oregon Trail, then continued by pack mule and on foot. He arrived in California on 12 July 1852. Farrar preferred mining in partnership with at least one other man, and at times two. They shared housekeeping duties, cooking, prospecting, building flumes and the actual work of digging and washing dirt for gold. Farrar's first partners were a father and son who absconded with the profits. On 1 January 1853, Farrar settled in at Tuttletown in partnership with John J. Norris of New Jersey. On 17 January they were joined by James M. Kelsey from Vermont. It is unclear when these partnerships ended. On 31 January 1854, Farrar acquired two new partners, John Beasy and Charles Beavans. Farrar remained in the Tuttletown area, prospecting frequently for new claims, until March 1854 when he returned to Perry County.
