JEFFREY FARNOL
Research by Jenny Nicol
FROM BRUM TO HELL'S KITCHEN 1978 Birmingham Evening Mail
BY Clem Lewis who looks back at the stirring books of Aston born author Jeffery Farnol and wonders if they could be due for a revival.
“I remember the glint of his eyes and the flash of his bared teeth, now to one side of me, now to the other as we swayed to and fro”.. In that small and narrow place, small chance was there for feint or parry. It was blind, brutal work, fierce and grim and silent. “I beat him with my fists, but his head was down between his arms. My eyes stared into a heaven streaked with blood and fire, there was a taste of sulphur in my mouth, my arms grew weak and nerveless”.
Stirring descriptive stuff, and only part of the life and death battle between hero and villain in that best seller of 60 years ago ”The Broad Highway” When the author wrote it, he could have been “living again” one of his more bloody battles in a Birmingham brass foundry.
Jeffery Farnol, born in Aston, one hundred years ago, had a stormy year or two learning to make tools, cut screws and lay out his fellow workers. His industrial career unveiled in Birmingham when he…………. a foreman who called him a liar. He left the city, went to London, married , and went to seek his fortune in America.
It was there he wrote the novel that became a best seller, the first of dozens of robust, adventurous

Jim Hawkins, le héros de Treasure Island Présentation générale. Liste des principaux auteurs britanniques. Où trouver des romans d'aventures britanniques? Auteurs d'autres pays. ...

The Fantasy Fan
REH to Charles D. Hornig, 1 November 1933: "Thanks for the copy of The Fantasy Fan. I found it very interesting, and think it has a good future. Anybody ought to be willing to pay a dollar for the privilege of reading, for a whole year, the works of Lovecraft, Smith, and Derleth. I am glad to see that you announce a poem by Smith in the next issue. He is a poet second to none. I also hope you can persuade Lovecraft to let you use some of his superb verse. Weird poetry possesses an appeal peculiar to itself and the careful use of it raises the quality of any magazine. ¶ I liked very much the department of 'True Ghost Stories' and hope you will continue it. The world is full of unexplained incidents and peculiar circumstances, the logical reasons of which are often so obscure and hidden that they are lent the illusion of the supernatural. ¶ Enclosed find my check for a year's subscription. I shall be glad to submit some things, if you wish."

June 16 Can anyone tell me something about the following titles? Some are from the Nautical Fiction List, but lack descriptions or have inadequate ones, others are waiting for a description so they can go into the list, they may not even be nautical or fiction. I try hard not to put anything into the list without a description of some sort, though of course I'm quite imperfect in that regard. Send replies to: jkohnen@boat-links.com Thanks!
