An untitled seventeen-stanza poem by an unidentified poet, September 28, 1862: "I saw a vision of a woman, where/Night and new morning strive for domination/Incomparably pale, and passing fair/And sad beyond expression." It is typical of the war's melodramatic verse.
William D. Cabell Papers, #276 Confederate soldiers occasionally expressed devotion to their sweethearts by bloodthirsty means. John M. McDowell, stationed in Mississippi, May 20, 1864, boasts to a female cousin that during a recent battle he tried to kill a Yankee for each local girl and two for a "Miss Puss."
Sarah Amanda McDowell Letters, #4618-B Courtship was never far from the minds of Confederate warriors. An unidentified Army of Northern Virginia soldier sent these two hand-drawn and colored valentines to sisters Barbara and Rebecca Ritenour on February 14, 1865. It is unknown which sister eventually won the soldier's heart.
Ritenour Papers, #38-665 An undated wartime letter from Mollie Lowerman, Walker's Creek, Virginia, to Amanda Bosserman: "You will enjoy yourself fine if you do have to take pokeroot. . . . I had the very pokeroot last Sunday at Church but I do not care one cent for it is pokeroot or no root at all." Mollie urges Amanda to visit as a regiment of cavalry is stationed in the neighborhood but she (Mollie) has only met one of its members, a Mr. Nelson of Monroe County whom she says is a "very nice fellow" but is also a "pokeroot." Pokeroot was a plant with stimulative and purgative abilities and apparently was also used for dyeing. It is unclear what Mollie meant by her use of the term in this letter.

Women's Civil War Diaries and Papers - Locations I found a most interesting book called Mothers of Invention; Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War One of the most difficult things to find in researching family history is information on our women ancestors. I thought that Ms. Faust's list was a gold mine of information for family researchers, and with the permission of The University of North Carolina Press, I abstracted the names of the women mentioned and the location of their documents. In the list below the name of the woman is listed first, then the type of document, the name of the collection, writing, book, article, etc. and where the item can be located. If the woman's maiden and married name was listed, she will be found alphabetically under the first letter of her married name. Search first using "find" and then scroll through the names. GOOD LUCK !!! I do not have any additional information on any of these women, books, articles, etc. Several of these diaries are now on-line. Augusta Evans Wilson
Author The fame of her nine popular novels, which gave delight to
millions of readers, was international. Her devotion to charitable
civic enterprises and to the Confederate cause was honored by
the leaders of her age.
Augusta Evans Wilson has been called the "foremost Southern novelist of her time." Certainly she was the finest in Alabama, writing for the best-seller lists Inez, Beulah St. Elmo Infelice Vashti At the Mercy of Tiberius A Speckled Bird , and Devota But she achieved fame in other areas as well. As a propagandist she wrote, unsigned, a series of fiery articles that appeared in the Mobile newspaper in the fall of 1859. Her most famous piece of propaganda was Macaria , a novel smuggled into the North for publication, slipped into the hands of Union troops and subsequently burned and banned by their commanders. Critics of Mrs. Wilson's novels and their merits have failed to agree. Whether or not her writings possessed the flame of greatness, there has been no question that she depicted the glow and warmth of real people; a tribute to her being the insubordination caused by Macaria among the ranks of the federal army in Tennessee.
