Friedrich Engels , the eldest son of a successful German industrialist, was born in Barmen on 28th November 1820. As a young man his father sent him to England to hel p manage his cotton-factory in Manchester . Engels was shocked by the poverty in the city and began writing an account that was published as Condition of the Working Classes in England (1844). He also made friends with the leaders of the Chartist movement in Britain
In 1844 Engels began contributing to a radical journal called Franco-German Annals that was being edited by Karl Marx in Paris. Later that year Engels met Marx and the two men became close friends. Engels shared Marx's views on capitalism and after their first meeting he wrote that there was virtually "complete agreement in all theoretical fields". Marx and Engels decided to work together. It was a good partnership, whereas Marx was at his best when dealing with difficult abstract concepts, Engels had the ability to write for a mass audience.

Frederick Engels: 1820-1895
100 years since the death of the co-founder of scientific socialism
By Peter Symonds 28 August 1995 August 5 marked 100 years since the death of Frederick Engelsco-founder with Karl Marx of scientific socialism. In an obituary written just two months after Engels's death, Vladimir Lenin, a young Russian revolutionary, summed up the significance of Engels's life and work for workers around the world. "After his friend Karl Marx, Engels was the finest scholar and teacher of the modern proletariat in the whole civilized world. From the time that fate brought Karl Marx and Frederick Engels together, the two friends devoted their life's work to the common cause. And so to understand what Frederick Engels has done for the proletariat, one must have a clear idea of the significance of Marx's teaching and work for the development of the contemporary working class movement. "Marx and Engels were the first to show that the working class and its demands are a necessary outcome of the present economic system, which together with the bourgeoisie inevitably creates and organizes the proletariat. They showed that it is not the well-meaning efforts of noble-minded individuals, but the class struggle of the organized proletariat that will deliver humanity from the evils which now oppress it. Marx and Engels were the first to explain in their scientific works that socialism is not the invention of dreamers, but the final aim and necessary result of the development of the productive forces in modern society....

Partnered with Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels is acknowledged as the co-founder of communism, a revolutionary thinker in his own right who wrote on a wide range of topics, from economics to history to literature.
Profile German political economist Friedrich Engels was a co-founder, with Karl Marx, of scientific socialism, now known as communism. Engels was born in Barmen (now Wuppertal). He came from a wealthy Protestant family. At an early age he was influenced by the works of the radical German poet Heinrich Heine and the German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel, and in 1839 he began writing on literary and philosophical topics for a number of publications. In 1842 Engels was converted to communist beliefs by the German Socialist Moses Hess. In the same year he met Karl Marx.
In a Manchester, England, textile firm between 1842 and 1844, Engels came into contact with chartism, the movement for extension of suffrage to workers. He contributed to the Northern Star and other publications and made a study of political economy. His experience and studies convinced him that politics and history could be explained only in terms of the economic development of society; he believed that the social evils of the time were the inevitable result of the institution of private property and could be eliminated only through a class struggle culminating in a communist society. These conclusions were embodied in a historical study, Condition of the Working Class in England (1844), which established Engels's reputation as a revolutionary political economist.

"Everything must justify its existence before the judgment seat of Reason, or give up existence." An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory. Some laws of state aimed at curbing crime are even more criminal. "The state is not 'abolished', it withers away."
