Search all of Ralph Waldo Emerson Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was a major American poet, philosopher and center of the American Transcendental movement.
Emerson was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Most of his ancestors were clergymen as was his father. He was educated in Boston and Harvard, like his father, and graduated in 1821. In 1825 he began to study at the Harvard Divinity School and next year he was licensed to preach by the Middlesex Association of Ministers. In 1829 Emerson married Ellen Louisa Tucker, who died in 1831 from consumption. Emerson became sole pastor at the Second Unitarian Church of Boston in 1830. Three years later he had a crisis of faith, finding that he "was not interested" in the rite of Communion. Emerson's controversial views caused his resignation. In 1835 Emerson married Lydia Jackson and settled with her at the east end of the village of Concord, where he then spent the rest of his life.

Following in his father's footsteps, Emerson was ordained a Unitarian minister in 1829, but he experienced a religious crisis after the death from tuberculosis of his first wife, the beautiful and romantic Ellen Tucker, to whom he had been married only eighteen months. Resigning from the Second Church and journeying to England in 1832, he became friends with Carlyle , Coleridge, and Wordsworth, and began to formulate his Transcendental faith.

It can be particularly useful to have students read some of Emerson's college journals, which show his uncertainty about how to become an "American scholar" or "poet." The journals, like "The American Scholar," show Emerson teaching himself how to read differently from the ways advocated by past cultures and educational institutions. They show him sorting through the conflicting array of resources and texts available to a young man in his circumstances and times. Students can also situate Emerson in a range of cultural relationships by using Kenneth W. Cameron's fascinating source books that reprint contemporary materials, such as Emerson Among His Contemporaries (Hartford: Transcendental Books, 1967), or Ralph Waldo Emerson's Reading (Hartford: Transcendental Books, 1962), or Emerson the Essayist (Raleigh: Thistle Press, 1945).

, essayist and poet. A central figure in the history of ideas in America, Emerson attacked the sterile rationalism and materialism of his age and encouraged a new generation to find "an original relation to the universe." His romantic advocacy of self-reliance, based on a notion of the "god within," diminished the authority of institutions and traditions and empowered the self. As the central figure in the movement known as transcendentalism, he had an immediate and personal influence on Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Bronson Alcott, and Theodore Parker, among others, and his writings on philosophical and aesthetic subjects strongly influenced the work of such major American authors as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickinson. Emerson was educated at the Boston Latin School and Harvard College and prepared for the Unitarian ministry at Harvard Divinity School. He served as minister at Boston's Second Church from 1829 to 1832, when he resigned over his refusal to administer Communion. Already a widower, in frail health, and unsure of his future, he traveled to Europe, where he met notable literary figures, including Thomas Carlyle with whom he carried on a correspondence for almost fifty years. He returned to the United States in 1833 and began his lecturing career. In his first book
