Descriptive Summary
Collection Number: MS C 470 Creator: American-Soviet Medical Society Title: American-Soviet Medical Society Records Dates: 1942-1987 (bulk 1943-1948) Quantity: 2.1 linear feet (5 ms boxes) Abstract: The society's major objective was to keep American physicians informed of Soviet medical advances, believing that these advances had not been adequately publicized in the United States. The American-Soviet Medical Society papers consist of the files generated by Robert Leslie as the Society's business manager and an incomplete copy of the FBI's file on Leslie and the society.
Biographical Note
The American-Soviet Medical Society to Exchange Medical Information, known informally as the American-Soviet Medical Society, was founded in New York City in 1943. The society's major objective was to keep American physicians informed of Soviet medical advances, believing that these advances had not been adequately publicized in the United States. In addition, like other national organizations (such as the National Council on Soviet-American Friendship (to which many of the leaders of the society also belonged), the American-Soviet Medical Society sought to improve relations between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. As the wartime alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union transformed itself into a cold war, however, membership plummeted and the Society ran out of funds; it was disbanded in 1949.

This list was compiled from military records used to create the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Many of those listed as Pittsburgh residents actually lived in the suburbs but were born or enlisted in the city. Also, the records don't differentiate between communities in Pennsylvania with the same name. As a result, some of the men listed may not have been Western Pennsylvania residents. New Atlantis , translated ed, James Spedding, Robert Leslie Ellis and Douglas Denon Heath, Boston, Brown and Taggard, 1861; cited hereafter
    http://www.sirbacon.org/wnewatlanis.htm
FRANCIS BACON'S NEW ATLANTIS A Foretaste of The Sciential Society; by Harvey Wheeler; ...the vision not of an ideal world released from the natural conditions to which ours is subject, but of our own world as it might be made if we did our duty by it...James Spedding, "Preface to the NEW ATLANTIS" "he had begun it with the intentional college of natural philosophy; but his desire of collecting the natural history diverted him, which he preferred many degrees before it." " The title page reads: "NEW ATLANTIS; A Work Unfinished." Rawley's words are: "His Lordship thought also in this present fable to have composed a frame of Laws, or of the best state or mould of a commonwealth..." The reason he did not carry New Atlantis to its political conclusion was, we are told, to return to the more pressing task of finishing his scientific work. Although this seems plausible, it does not square with other known facts. Bacon devoted much of his last few years to perfecting the popularized versions of his scientific doctrines, trying to insure their general accessibility. The more likely reason the New Atlantis was left incomplete is that, on reviewing what he had written, Bacon would have discovered two things about the book: first, that it really was finished, in effect. This would have been apparent as soon as he reviewed his description of the chancery of science called Salomon's House and before turning his thoughts to writing the constitution. For this would have revealed that already nearly any reader could detect already the main outlines of the constitution merely by reading between the lines.

    Valerius Terminus
    of the Interpretation of Nature
    Preface by Robert Leslie Ellis
T HE following fragments of a great work on the Interpretation of Nature were first published in Stephens's Letters and Remains [1734]. They consist partly of detached passages, and partly of an epitome of twelve chapters of the first book of the proposed work. The detached passages contain the first, sixth, and eighth chapters, and portions of the fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and sixteenth. The epitome contains an account of the contents of all the chapters from the twelfth to the twenty-sixth inclusive, omitting the twentieth, twenty-third, and twenty-fourth. Thus the sixteenth chapter is mentioned both in the epitome and among the detached passages, and we are thus enabled to see that the two portions of the following tract belong to the same work, as it appears from both that the sixteenth chapter was to treat of the doctrine of idola.
It is impossible to ascertain the motive which determined Bacon to give to the supposed author the name of Valerius Terminus, or to his commentator, of whose annotations we have no remains, that of Hermes Stella. It may be conjectured that by the name Terminus he intended to intimate that the new philosophy would put an end to the wandering of mankind in search of truth, that it would be the

    LUDLOW MSS.
The Ludlow mss., 1898-1948, are the papers of Louis Leon Ludlow, 1873-1950, journalist and congressman from Indiana. The collection is organized into the following series: I. Correspondence; II. Printed; III. Scrapbooks; and, IV. Writings. An inventory of the collection is available. In the collection are letters introducing Ludlow as Washington representative of the Indianapolis Sentinel , 1901; letters congratulating him on his transfer to Washington correspondent of the George F. McCulloch's chain of papers, the Indianapolis Star , the Muncie Star , and the Terre Haute Star , 1903; a tribute to Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh, 1927; letters and articles on Indian mounds in Indiana and Ohio, 1928; letters in the 1930's on Townsend's old age pension plan; letters and petitions on the Peace Amendment which proposed to amend the Constitution of the United States to provide for a referendum vote on war and to take the profit out of war, 1935-1940. Presidents of universities and colleges, ministers, religious organizations, railroad brotherhoods, other labor organizations, American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, American War Mothers, National Grange, Women's Christian Temperance Union, business and professional women's clubs, peace organizations, prominent men and women in all professions, and the common people all supported the amendment. In spite of numerous letters from congressmen and senators to vote for the bill, it was defeated.
