Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) If America's founding fathers had anticipated the digital frontier, there would be a clause in the Constitution protecting your rights online, as well. Instead, a modern group of freedom fighters was necessary to extend the original vision into the digital world. That's where the Electronic Frontier Foundation comes in.

Electronic Frontier Foundation: Tor
Last year Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) released Tor overview of how Tor works and if you are interested in trying it out, the latest version can be downloaded here BayFF will be hosting an event tomorrow night, Tuesday, May 10th, at 111 Minna Street in San Francisco exploring the history of Tor, as well as discussing various ways to implement and use this revolutionary software. See the Squid List post for more info. Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. Tor provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy. tags: events sanfrancisco eff

Do you know your online rights? Have you received a letter asking you to remove information from a Web site or to stop engaging in an activity? Are you concerned about liability for information that someone else posted to your online forum? If so, this site is for you. Chilling Effects aims to help you understand the protections that the First Amendment and intellectual property laws give to your online activities. We are excited about the new opportunities the Internet offers individuals to express their views, parody politicians, celebrate their favorite movie stars, or criticize businesses. But we've noticed that not everyone feels the same way. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some individuals and corporations are using intellectual property and other laws to silence other online users. Chilling Effects encourages respect for intellectual property law, while frowning on its misuse to "chill" legitimate activity. The website offers background material and explanations of the law for people whose websites deal with topics such as Fan Fiction Domain Names and Trademarks Anonymous Speech , and

    THE ELECTRONIC FRONTIER FOUNDATION The Electronic Frontier Foundation was established in 1990 to help civilize the electronic frontier; to make it truly useful and beneficial not just to a technical elite, but to everyone; and to do this in a way which is in keeping with our society's highest traditions of the free and open flow of information and communication. To that end, the Electronic Frontier Foundation will:
    - engage in and support educational activities which increase popular understanding of the opportunities and challenges posed by developments in computing and telecommunications;
    - develop among policy-makers a better understanding of the issues underlying free and open telecommunications, and support the creation of legal and structural approaches which will ease the assimilation of these new technologies by society;
    - raise public awareness about civil liberties issues arising from the rapid advancement in the area of new computer-based communications media;
    - support litigation in the public interest to preserve, protect, and extend First Amendment rights within the realm of computing and telecommunications technology;
