EFF: Legal Guide for Bloggers
Version current as of June 8, 2005 Updated July 6, 2005 Whether you're a newly minted blogger or a relative old-timer, you've been seeing more and more stories pop up every day about bloggers getting in trouble for what they post. The difference between you and the reporter at your local newspaper is that in many cases, you may not have the benefit of training or resources to help you determine whether what you're doing is legal. And on top of that, sometimes knowing the law doesn't help - in many cases it was written for traditional journalists, and the courts haven't yet decided how it applies to bloggers. But here's the important part: None of this should stop you from blogging. Freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Internet bullies shouldn't use the law to stifle legitimate free expression. That's why EFF created this guide, compiling a number of FAQs designed to help you understand your rights and, if necessary, defend your freedom.

Thursday, August 04, 2005 EFF probes printer watermarks - Joris Evers, CNET News
Color laser printers print hidden data that lets law enforcement agencies tell which printer was used and when, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The EFF on Thursday sent a freedom of information act request to the U.S. Secret Service in an attempt to get details on the tracing feature, which the group says impacts the privacy of users. "This undermines people's ability to speak and publsih anonymously," Seth Schoen, a staff technologist at EFF said Friday at the 13th annual DefCon hacker event in Las Vegas. In the traditional EFF presentation at DefCon, Schoen placed a sheet of paper printed on a Xerox DocuColor printer under a microscope with a blue light. Yellow dots appeared. These identify the printer and when the print was made, Schoen said.

Karl Auerbach, the North American Elected Director of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) began asking for corporate records in December 2000, shortly after he was elected to the Board. ICANN management dragged its feet for nine months, then issued a new "policy" never brought before the Board for discussion or vote requiring Auerbach to sign a non-disclosure agreement that placed Auerbach's ability to discuss the records at the discretion of ICANN management. "California nonprofit law requires a corporation to provide its directors the information required to make informed and intelligent decisions," said Auerbach. "ICANN management has denied me the tools I need to exercise independent judgment and fulfill my duties as a director." "Directors, not management, have the ultimate responsibility and authority to oversee the operations of a corporation like ICANN," explained Auerbach's attorney James Tyre. "ICANN staff's arbitrary and changing policy regarding access to corporate records is not only disturbing, but unlawful in the state of California." "The Electronic Frontier Foundation finds ICANN management's apparent abuse of power disturbing," added EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn. "The Internet community relies on well-informed ICANN directors like Mr. Auerbach to administer the corporation appropriately." Because ICANN is a non-profit California corporation, the organization must comply with a California statute giving any director of the corporation an "absolute right" to inspect and copy corporate records. In addition, ICANN's bylaws provide that: "Every Director shall have the right at any reasonable time to inspect and copy all books, records and documents of every kind, and to inspect the physical properties of the Corporation. The Corporation shall establish reasonable procedures to protect against the inappropriate disclosure of confidential information." General Information About the EFF
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was founded in July of 1990 to ensure that the principles embodied in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are protected as new communications technologies emerge. From the beginning, EFF has worked to shape our nation's communications infrastructure and the policies that govern it in order to maintain and enhance First Amendment, privacy and other democratic values. We believe that our overriding public goal must be the creation of Electronic Democracy, so our work focuses on the establishment of:
    • new laws that protect citizens' basic Constitutional rights as they use new communications technologies,
    • a policy of common carriage requirements for all network providers so that all speech, no matter how controversial, will be carried without discrimination

The JEFF-3.1 Nuclear Data Library is the latest version of the Joint Evaluated Fission and Fusion Library. The complete suite of data was released in May 2005 , and contains general purpose nuclear data evaluations compiled at the NEA Data Bank in co-operation with several laboratories in NEA Data Bank member countries. JEFF-3.1 contains also radioactive decay data, activation data and fission yields data. It combines the efforts of the JEFF and EFF Working Groups who have contributed to this combined fission and fusion file. This library supersedes JEFF-3.0. The library contains neutron reaction data, incident proton data and thermal neutron scattering law data in the ENDF-6 format.
The library can be downloaded in its entirety as a single file or one file per isotope from the JEFF-3.1 Project

The question I get asked more than any other is, "Chip, are you a dog ?" The answer is, "No!" and now I have the photographic evidence to prove it. The photograph on the right, taken August 2001, was part of a publicity shoot during a class I taught at a community Internet training program . The photographer is Donna Clancy-Goertz , who, I later learned, is a well known erotica photographer here in Austin. She didn't ask me to take my clothes off, so I didn't realize it at the time. The photo below is not a wookie . This is a digital photo of me, taken in 1988. You probably blew by that last sentence without realizing the significance. How many digital cameras had you seen in 1988? Right, probably none. This photo was taken as part of the FaceSaver Project , which catalogued attendees at several conferences of the Usenix Association . They had an awesome setup with a professional photographer, and we all got to go home with a laser printed sheet of stickers with our face on them. It was all quite nifty for its time.
