    BIOGRAPHIES
    James Bosley Noel Wyatt
James Bosley Noel Wyatt was born in Baltimore in 1847 to a family that enjoyed considerable social prominence. His paternal grandfather was Dr. William E. Wyatt, Sr., who served for 50 years as rector of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, Baltimore's oldest Episcopal parish. On his mother's side, he was descended from the Noel and Nicholson families, who were influential in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. His father was a civil engineer who was seriously disabled on the job the year that James was born. Until he was 17, he lived at Summer Hill, a suburban family estate northwest of Baltimore (which was adjacent to both Mondawmin and Auchentoroly). He was educated at home by tutors until age 13, and then attended the Rugby Academy on Hamilton Terrace. In 1865, Wyatt and his parents moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was tutored for a year before entering Harvard College, graduating in 1670. In the fall of 1870 he entered the architectural department of the five-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology. By 1871 he had moved to Paris and entered the Atelier Vaudremer of the Ecole des Beaux Arts (the same Atelier in which Louis Sullivan had studied) where he studied for three years. Wyatt returned to Baltimore in the fall of 1874. He worked for a brief time in the office of E. Francis Baldwin, where he probably first met his future partner, Joseph Evans Sperry, who was also employed by Baldwin during this period. It was Sperry who prepared the drawing of the Safe Deposit and Trust Company Building (1875) featured in the January 15, 1876 issue of the American Architect and Building News, during its first month of publication.

Recognize A Founding Father Of
American Music! Petition To Put Ray Charles On The $10 Bill
We are signing this petition as an appeal to place the image of Ray Charles on the U.S. Treasury's ten dollar bill. Upon Mr. Charles' recent passing, we are reminded of the impact this great American had on the development of American culture and music. Known as "The Genius" since the early 1950s, Ray Charles is a founding father of modern rhythm and blues, jazz, rock and gopsel music. In the course of his remarkable life and career, Mr. Charles overcame personal adversity in the forms of blindness, extreme poverty, racial oppression and drug-addiction to become one of the most innovative and respected musicians of the 20th century. In doing so, he embodies the most cherished ideals of the American character: self-reliance, courage and sacrifice. We credit the position of cultural esteem our country enjoys today to the innovations of artistic visionaries like Ray Charles; and we should recognize him as an exemplar of his profession. Building on the jazz tradition America¹s classical music and our greatest contribution to world culture Mr. Charles fused all genres of our country¹s roots music including blues, gospel, folk and country into a recognizable whole; a unique music called "soul." His soul music has proved capable of reaching across class, race, religious and social lines to touch all Americans on an emotional level. His songs "Hit the Road Jack" and "What'd I Say" have become American classics; his rendition of "Georgia On My Mind" has been designated the official State song of Georgia; and his recording of "America the Beautiful" has become a modern hymn, if not the unofficial national anthem of the United States.

Counties of the United States
While researching these items, I discovered that the status of Anchorage is municipality rather than borough. Juneau and Sitka have the status of "city and borough". Both they and Anchorage are also described as "unified home rule municipalities". I also took the opportunity to look up the new FIPS code for Broomfield city and county in Colorado. Earlier, Dave Schul drew my attention to mistakes in the "Capital" column for two Alaskan boroughs (in these cases, "borough seats" is a better description than "capitals"). I've checked his information, and it appears to be correct. Either my old information was wrong, or the borough seats have changed. I have chosen the latter assumption, and guessed that the change occurred in 2000. The secondary administrative divisions of the United States are of several types. There are counties, parishes, independent cities, boroughs, census areas, city-and-boroughs, a district, a city-and-county, and a municipality. The general term for all these types is "county-equivalent units". The list below shows all 3,141 county-equivalent units of the United States, in groups of 25. The County Maps page has links to state maps that show counties.
