Information Analytics has developed 4W Publisher, a Windows-based tool that not only stores all Web pages in a database, it also automatically builds main menus and keyword indexes to go along with the detail pages. 4W Publisher stores the body text of a detail page separately from the header and footer and optional menu bar, so your entire service will have a consistent (and easy to maintain) look and feel. When pages are updated, it builds the menu and indexes, plus all the hypertext links to the detail pages. 4W Publisher runs under Windows 3.1 and uses Microsoft's Access Jet Engine as its underlying database. This means you can write other applications that can access your product database, perform automated updates and generate printed reports. For more information, see the 4W Publisher home page at

Welcome
Technical editors are people who edit technical information. They work in many fields, including engineering, computer hardware and software, science, medicine, law, banking, and website development for any business or activity. Technical editors' primary job is to ensure documents are suitable for their target audience, thus technical editing is really a quality control job. This website is a place for technical editors to:
  • Share knowledge, experiences and resources Demonstrate to writers, managers and others the wide range of knowledge and skills technical editors have to offer
Non-editors are welcome too! Much of the information you'll find here is applicable to writers, managers, and people working in other roles, and many editors have other job titles or multiple roles.

Image Editors with PNG Support
For the purposes of this page, an "image editor" is defined as a paint or drawing program that supports pixel-level editing (or the equivalent). As a general rule of thumb, if it's got a pencil or paint-brush tool, it's in; if it supplies only "algorithms" (such as sharpening, blurring, edge-detection, cropping, etc.), it's not. See the Image Converters page for applications in the latter class. As on the other PNG-applications pages, links to home WWW sites or to downloadable versions are provided where known, but if a link is broken, check the location and see if an updated version is available (and please tell Greg! ). Media, military faulted in news coverage
A Gallup Poll showed a marked decline in the American public's confidence that the news media and the military are keeping them well informed about defense and national security issues. The survey, conducted for the McCormick Tribune Foundation and released last week in conjunction with the biennial Military and the Media Conference, indicated that 61 percent of Americans believe the news media keeps them well informed on military and national security matters, down from 79 percent six years ago. The Pentagon fared worse, dropping from 77 percent in 1999 to 54 percent this year.

AIMS AND SCOPE
Language Sciences is a forum for debate, conducted so as to be of interest to the widest possible audience, on conceptual and theoretical issues in the various branches of general linguistics. The journal is also concerned with bringing to linguists' attention current thinking about language within disciplines other than linguistics itself; relevant contributions from anthropologists, philosophers, psychologists and sociologists, among others, will be warmly received. In addition, the Editor is particularly keen to encourage the submission of essays on topics in the history and philosophy of language studies, and review articles discussing the import of significant recent works on language and linguistics.

Elizabeth Gaskell (1805-65), a successful and popular writer in her day, and a notably attractive and dynamic personality, has come to be recognised as one of the major English novelists of the nineteenth century. Her work is varied, ranging from radical treatment of social crisis in her 'industrial' novels, Mary Barton and North and South , through controversially sympathetic portrayal of single motherhood in Ruth , to the acute psychology of character, and perceptive presentation of social change in Wives and Daughters . Her shorter fiction often tackles subversive material, addressing violence and disorder with surprising explicitness. Her talent for comedy is best known through the highly popular

    Introduction
Have you ever tried to include a passage in a different alphabet in one of your documents, for example a quotation in Russian in an English document, only to find that you have no Cyrillic characters available? Or sent a Spanish document in electronic form to someone in Greece, only to be told that the accented Latin characters have been replaced by Greek characters? Or produced a Web page that includes technical symbols and found that it works with Windows but not with Mac OS or Unix? Problems like these arise with non-Latin alphabets and Symbol fonts ANSI character set If you live in a country such as Egypt, Greece, Israel, Russia or Thailand that uses a different alphabet, then your version of Windows may use a different character set. The first 128 characters will be the same as in ANSI, but many of the places in the second set of 128 will be taken by characters from the Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Cyrillic or Thai alphabets. Now that documents are often transferred electronically as e-mail messages, e-mail attachments or Web pages, instead of on paper, reading documents from another country, particularly a country with a different alphabet, is becoming more of a problem. There are similar problems when moving documents between operating systems such as DOS, Windows, Mac OS and UNIX. The current version (4.1) of the
