WORLD OF THE CHILD
Early Works
In western Europe, there was no separate category of books for children before the eighteenth century. The Bible , stories of saints and martyrs, and bestiaries or books about exotic animals, were probably the first printed books available to children. The woodcut illustrations of these early works would be intriguing even for those unable to read the text. Early books for children were strongly influenced by the conservative English beliefs of the seventeenth century. Seeing children as amoral savages needing to be taught right from wrong, society used stories filled with death and damnation to frighten children into good behavior. Humor and imagination were banned, replaced by stories of boys and girls who suffered grisly fates for misbehaving. Johann Amos Comenius, 1592-1670.
Joh. Amos Comenii Orbis Sensualium Pictus . London: Printed for S. Leacroft, 1777.
Orbis Sensualium Pictus translated as "The Visible World" or "The World Around Us in Pictures" was the first European schoolbook based on the idea of visual education. Each page consists of a picture of some subject or object and, underneath, a bilingual Latin-English text which in simple terms explains the image. Originally published in German and Latin in Nuremberg in 1654, the book was available to both adults and children. Used as a picture book by young children and a Latin textbook by older students, Orbis Sensualium Pictus was reprinted until well into the nineteenth century.

Frances Hodgson Burnett Born in Manchester, England, Burnett moved to rural Tennessee at age sixteen with her financially bankrupt family. To support herself, she began writing for American magazines. Though she began writing novels for adults, she gained lasting success writing for children. She is best known for Little Lord Fauntleroy The Secret Garden , and A Little Princess The Secret Garden . New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1911.
Kate Chopin Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1870, she married Oscar Chopin and moved to Louisiana, living in both New Orleans and Natchitoches. She began to write after her husband died of swamp fever in 1883, and she was forced to support herself and her children. Bayou Folk (1894), a collection of stories about life in Louisiana, gave her national recognition. Her popularity soon ended with the publication of her controversial, but now critically aclaimed novel

The Infant's Library Practical Education Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817) was a member of the Birmingham-based Lunar Society - a circle of 'enlightened' scientists, inventors and philosophers who specialised in the practical application of science and technology to industry. Edgeworth himself made advances in the fields of telegraphy and electricity but is renowned for his 'discoveries' and keen lifelong interest in another field of 'experimental science': education. Edgeworth tested his theories concerning education on his own children and employed his second wife, Honora, to record the children's responses to different forms of teaching. Honora's notes formed the basis of a collection of stories entitled Practical Education (1780) but it was not until 1791 that Edgeworth began to plan a general essay on education, assisted by his daughter, Maria (1767-1849). Their treatise, Practical Education , appeared in 1798. The Edgeworths did not claim to be entirely original and made frequent references to the works of previous educational theorists, including John Locke's

General Information
Research in children's literature and the history of childhood is emerging as a new and fascinating field of study, and the Marguerite Archer Collection of Historic Children's Literature contains samplings of materials rich in variety covering the important trends in children's literature from 1776 to the present day.
Collection Strengths
  • The History of Teaching Literacy
    Collection Provenance
In 1982, Mrs. Marguerite Archer, an educator, innovator, and collector, gave to the J. Paul Leonard Library, San Francisco State University a collection of approximately 3,500 historical children's books, textbooks, and periodicals, as well as ephemera and realia, including puzzles, toys and educational games. The collection, originally based upon the Peter Parley to Penrod Bibliography, is considered to be a major scholarly resource showing the progressive development and growth of children's literature from the early nineteenth century to the present day. It includes many original editions of literary classics, as well as early textbooks and related teaching aids. In 1990, the collection was moved to the Archives and Special Collections Department of the library, due to library restructuring that took place after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. In Spring 1991 and in Fall 1993, the Library received grants funded under the Library Services and Construction Act, to create effective and thorough access for the Archer Collection via the University's on-line catalog (Investigator). As a result of these grants over 7,000 of the books are now accessible to students and researchers for the study of childhood and research in the area of children's literature.
